Love, American style
By HART N. HASTEN One evening in 1960, while visiting Los Angeles with my two bachelor buddies, Jerry Rubin and Sonny Streitman, my friend, Larry Gozansky, had taken us to a Jew'ish singles dance at the local Jewish Community Center. We w'ere sitting and chatting with one of Larry's friends, Sam Dreyfus. Naturally, the subject turned to Israel, my favorite topic. We discussed the current political situation. Sam listened politely to my opinion of the Ben Gurion regime, but turned the conversation back to his favorite topic - girls. "You know, you really ought to meet a girl I know who used to live in Israel," he said. "She's very pretty and lives over near Fairfax Avenue." "I don't know. We've got plenty of girls right here. Anyway, we're driving back to Minneapolis in a few days." "No. You really have got to meet this girl," he persisted. "Her name's Simona, but 1 don't have her phone number. I do have her friend Batya's

I stunned her a bit when 1 announced that 1 was coming over to her house to meet her. "What do you mean you're coming over? Who are you?" she shot back. I explained again that I w-as from Minneapolis, that I was a friend of Dreyfus, and that I didn't have much time left in LA. 1 didn't know if she was impressed with my cheekiness, but she agreed to see me. As on most Sundays, 1 hadn't bothered shaving, and 1 was dressed very casually. I Continued on next page

Shoshana Susan Watkins and David Harper met on November 3, 1995 at an erev Shabbat dinner at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla in Indianapolis. Shoshana and several others were guests at Aviva and Bob Tavel's table. David had gone solo to check out the shul. Aviva invited him to join their table, and by the end of the evening he was checking out Shoshana too. Several weeks later, at Thanksgiving, Shoshana and David announced their engagement; they were married on May 19,1996 in Bloomington, Indiana. Needless to say, they have been involved with CST ever since.
