NEW YORK - Twelve American students left on Jan. 2 to spend the spring semester in Israel. The students are participating in the Overseas Student Program at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, which includes a total of 35 students, most of whom are Americans. Despite the situation in Israel, many American students have decided to continue with their plans to study there, and this semester's program includes students from The State University of New York-Al-bany, Rutgers University, Wesleyan University, and Vassar College. Students returning in the next few weeks after spending a semester overseas include participants from Tufts University, George Washington University, and American University. "Our students' safety remains the University's foremost priority. Students will be updated on the unfolding situation in the country, and will
be advised on travel. The program is in regular correspondence with parents and study abroad professionals at the students' home institutions," according to Rebecca Weinstein, Director of BGU's Overseas Student Program. "Ben-Gurion University offers a unique program for a unique student. Now is the time when students should not just stand with Israel, but stand, study, and spend time in Israel. Our students live with Israelis and learn a tremendous amount from them, first-hand, about what it means to be a young person in Israel at this difficult time," added Weinstein. The only Israeli university to be founded by an act of the Knesset, Ben-Gurion University was established in 1969 with a mission of developing the Negev Desert, the land, and its people. Prof. Avishay Braverman currently serves as the university's fifth president, and the university has
achieved recognition as a world-class academic and research center. In the last decade, student population has tripled to over 16,000. With campuses in BeerSheva and Sede Boker, BGU has become the central force in the educational, agricultural, technological, cultural, and social development of the Negev, which comprises 60 percent of the land of Israel. Brooklyn incident BROOKLYN - A 13-year-old Jewish honors student was assaulted by an Arab teenaged girl at a middle school in Dyker Heights who was arrested and suspended from the school. Department of Education spokesman Kevin Ortiz said that if there were any other people involved, they would be reprimanded as well.
