Sargon to conduct a festival of voices
Save these dates
Choirs and individuals from around the state will join voices at the JCC's Laikin Auditorium on Sunday, Jan. 26, 3 p.m. for "A Celebration of Psalms." The Third Annual Jewish Choral Music Festival Concert will conclude a threeday workshop with internationally renowned director, composer and scholar-in-resi-dence Simon Sargon. The event is co-sponsored by the Bureau of Jewish Education, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, and Congregation Shaarey Tefilla. Hiddur mitzvah The concept of hiddur mitzvah, the uplifting of a commandment by beautification of the commandment, has been central to the practice of Judaism. With the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C. E., prayers supplanted sacrifice as our offering to the Almighty. The words used and how they were spoken or sung assumed increasing importance. It was this idea of hiddur mitzvah in relation to davening (praying) that has led to the development of both the cantorate and choral singing. The conditions of hiddur mitzvah are fulfilled by the musical forms of psalmody, chanted Bible reading, and prayer tunes based on simple melodic patterns. Simon Sargon Simon Sargon was born in Bombay, India of SephardicIndian and Ashkenazic-Rus-
