Rona’s Roving Reports
Will good win over evil in 2003? Let’s hope so!
By RON A TRACHTENBERG On a personal note ... It is with much sadness that I announce that my family and 1 will be permanently leaving Indiana next week. For reasons too lengthy to list in this small column, we have to return to our apartment in New York and continue our lives there. I have been blessed to have found such a thriving Jewish community here in Indy. 1 have many people to thank for making my two-year stay so rewarding. First, I'd like to thank Mr. Cohen for seeing the potential in me when I first arrived and for asking me to write Rona's Roving Reports each week. This gave me the opportunity to meet so many of you wonderful readers. Next, I would like to thank Rabbi Arnold Bienstock and the whole gang at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla for adopting me and making me feel comfortable even when I had to wear my protective mask and gloves. Serving as mashgucha for two months put me in contact with Debi van Flymen, who subsequently invited me to work with her when she opened her successful new Nosh Bisto restaurant at the
JCC. I would like to thank all the folks who participate in the Pilder's kosher meat co-op, because it allowed me to purchase my own kosher meat. I would like to commend all the bar/bat mitzvah and JCC Maccabi teens who took the time to patiently answer all my questions so that I could publicize their simchas. Finally, I am grateful to all my personal "inside" contacts (you all know who you are) for often getting me the inside scoops on events so that I could produce quality feature stories. I will sorely miss this warm and caring Jewish community. You will always have a place in my memories and my heart. I leave you in the competent hands of Shoshana Harper, editor of Jewishindy.com, who has graciously agreed to undertake my column and make it her own. Shalom and b'hatzlacha. Shabbat at Hooverwood On Friday, Dec. 27, 5 p.m., the Social Action Committee of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation invites the community to perform a special Shabbat mitzvah. All you have to do is sit next to one of the Hooverwood senior
residents during Shabbat dinner and enjoy their company. Talk with them, share dinner with them, and help repair the world (tikkun olam) with this one good act. This is the final monthly event of 2002. If you are unable to make this event, upcoming "Shabbat at Hooverwood" programs will take place on January' 24, February 28, March 28, and April 25. If you have the time to spare, please call Brickette Solgan at 915-0744.
Hitler movie to open On Friday, Dec. 27, a new film about Hitler (the artist) entitled "Max" will be released in New York and Los Angeles. The producer, Andra Hamori, is a Hungarian-bom Jew whose family was persecuted by the Nazis. The playwright, Menno Meyjes, believes that in order to understand how people like Hitler choose to become monsters, we have to understand how they think as ordinary human beings. In the movie, actor John Cusak plays Max Rothman - a sophisticated Jewish art dealer who attempts to take the young struggling artist Adolph Hitler under his wing.
Rothman tells Hitler to dig for deeper emotions and channel into art the energy he puts into making anti-Semitic speeches for the army. Hitler, however, grows frustrated by his failure to express himself artistically and subsequently turns his weakness into strength when he realizes that art plus politics equals power. The rest is a horrible history for the Jewish people. Beth-El-ders have fun On Saturday, Dec. 28, the Congregation Beth-El Zedeck "Beth-el-ders" group will meet following Shabbat morning services for a chicken lunch prepared by Sharon Mishkin and her committee. Then Barbara Liebschutz will entertain the group with dance. RSVP by calling the synagogue at 253-9211 or 2533441. Tues. Golden Age Club On Tuesday, Dec. 31, 11:30 a.m., the JCC's Golden Age Club will be hosting its ongoing Tuesday program, featuring an exercise class from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by a sumptuous kosher lunch of sloppy Joe, cole slaw, spinach, fruit, coffee, and tea. The fee for the exercise class is 75 cents and $1.50 for the
lunch. For more information, call the JCC (251-9467). First brunch of 2003 On Wednesday, Jan. 1,10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Congregation Shaarey Tefilla is hosting a brunch with activities for children and plenty of coffee for adults. Enjoy bagels lox, cream cheese, fresh fruit sweets, kugel, and juice. The fee for adults is $7.50; children (6-12) pay $5; children (under 6) pay $2.50. CST tot Shabbat On Friday, Jan. 3, 6 p.m., Congregation Shaarey Tefilla invites all Jewish pre-school aged children and their parents to their special half-hour tot Shabbat experience. You don’t have to be a member to participate. Simply drop b\ with your child, and watch him/her have a great time. Women's Rosh Chodesh On Saturday, Jan. 4, 8 p.m the Aura women's group will celebrate Jewish womanhood by hosting its monthly Rosh Chodesh (Shevat) at the home of Hallie Segal. The topic for the evening will be "erev shira," an evening of song with Rikki Rose Debbie Bomstein will give the D'var Torah, "The life and song Continued on next I’W
