Rona’s Roving Reports It’s not too early to start thinking about camp
By RONA TRACHTENBERG Congregation B'nai Torah and the JCC welcome scholar-in-residence Jeffrey Woolf December 13-14. Rabbi Woolf teaches Talmud at Bar-llan University and history at Touro College. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard and rabbinical smicha from Yeshiva University. He lives in Efrat, Israel. The weekend includes Shabbat dinner at the JCC Laikin Auditorium on Friday,
Dec. 13, 7:15 p.m., catered by Debi VonFlymen of Nosh Catering. Following dinner Rabbi Woolf will speak on "Judaism and Islam: The Roots of the Present." On Shabbat morning Rabbi Woolf will present a D'var Torah at services (9 a.m.) after the Torah reading and following lunch. The after lunch topic is "Ashkenaz and Separad: How and Why They Differ." 14, 8 p.m., Steve and Kathy Frankel will host a melavalt malkah (evening of conversation) with desserts and coffee provided. Rabbi Woolf's topic will be "Looking at the Non-Jew: Historical Jewish Responses. The event is free and open to all. The cost for the Shabbat dinner and Shabbat lunch combined is $24 ($16 for children under 12). For more information, contact B'nai Torah (253-5253). Sweet Shabbat On Saturday, Dec. 14, 11:15 a.m.. Congregation Shaarey Tefilla invites the community to attend their monthly halfhour Sweet Shabbat just for children. Synagogue president Larry Bublick was pleased to see the chapel filled with 50 tots, their proud parents, and grandparents all singing Shabbat songs and enjoying a Kiddish complete with grape juice and a sweet assortment of baked goodies. Previous volunteer organizers have included Sally and Michael Meyers, Jeri Jo and Bob Shuckit, and Michelle and Ofer Korin. This event is free and open to all Jewish families in the community.
Tot Shabbat On Saturday, Dec. 14, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., IHC invites pre-schoolers and their families to participate in a program of stories, art activities, and lunch, "Exploring Jewish Symbols." The main dish will be provided. Families are asked to bring a side dish, salad, dessert, or beverages. For reservations, call 2542186. Parents' night out On Saturday, Dec. 14, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., parents can enjoy their evening knowing that their children are having a great time in the safe JCC environment. Simply drop off your child (over the age of three who no longer needs diapers) at the JCC and he/she will enjoy four hours of special activities, movies, swimming, snacks, and dinner. Pack a towel, bathing suit, and pillow. Reservations are encouraged, but walk-ins will be accepted. The fee is $15 for JCC members and $18 for nonmembers. Call the JCC at 2519467 for more information. Maccabi 2003 open house On Sunday, Dec. 15,11 a.m. to noon, in the JCC's Cook Community Board Room, the
organizers of next year 's JCC Summer Maccabi Games invite potential participants to a bagel breakfast to find out how you can be a part of this wonderful experience. Last year, 25 teens, ranging in age from 13 to 16, traveled to Omaha for this popular annual athletic competition. Many came away with new Jewish e-mail friends from all over the United States and overseas. During the summer of 2003. the Indianapolis team will travel to St. Louis from August 10 to 15 for competition, social events, and community service projects. The organizers are looking for 25 teens to participate in the following sports: basketball soccer, table tennis, golf, bowling, in-line hockcv basketball, and tennis.
