Ari Weiss killed while aiding fellow soldier
By MARVIN MIGDOL DALLAS—It is not surprising that Ari Weiss had very strong Jewish identification. He was the son of Rabbi Stewart Weiss, who was the spiritual leader at Dallas's Tiferet Israel Congregation (Traditional) during the 1980s and until 1992. The Weiss family, including Ari's mother, Susie, moved to Ra'anana in '92, and the rabbi started the Jewish Outreach Center to help educate new immigrants. Ari was shot and killed on Sept. 30 near Nablus, in the West Bank, while trying to help a wounded fellow Israeli soldier during a confrontation with Palestinians. He was a
month shy of his 22nd birthday. Ari was in an elite unit of the Israeli army. He attended Akiba Academy (Orthodox) in Dallas, where he was remembered as a shy, quiet, skinny boy. It was difficult to picture him as an elite unit Israeli soldier. Rabbi Weiss frequently exercised his talent for journalism while living in Dallas. He often contributed articles to the Texas Jewish Post and told this writer of his desire to expand his newspaper writing activities. Sgt. Ari is survived by two brothers and two sisters in Ra'anana, a sister in California, and his mother's parents in Cleveland.

Former victim tells of abuse by rabbis
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-At a time when religious groups are rocked with scandal and a variety of indignities, ministers, priests, and rabbis no longer appear virtuous and holy. Too many of them now emerge as disciples of sexual perversions, deviant behavior, and perpetrators of sexual abuse of all kinds. As a replacement for God's words, some of them now murmur incantations satiated with sexual allusions and carnal innuendoes. A real bombshell. Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trust (now available through IstBooks Library) affirms the pervasiveness of sexual abuse against women of all ages carried out by religious leaders.
Author Charlotte Rolnick Schwab attests the many betrayals and even alleged murders by these purported envoys of sacred wisdom. In Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trust, Schwab writes about her own experience as the wife of a rabbi (her second marriage), who is accused of sexual misconduct. With disgust, she reveals her husband's violence toward her and his threat to kill her if she exposes his double life. She includes suggestions for what is to be done to bring about healing and change. Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trust recommends policies synagogues and denominations might adopt to
combat this issue. It provides a definition of sexual abuse, gives information about what leads rabbis to become sexual predators, and offers suggestions for prevention. Schwab, who also suffered domestic abuse in her first marriage, outlines a healing program geared toward Jewish survivors of rabbis' sexual abuse, but adaptable for healing from any kind of abuse by clergy or wife beaters. A Manhattan psychotherapist for 25 years, Schwab specializes in helping women and men in personal and business relationships to communicate and negotiate effectively and to create healthy relationships. She lives in Delray Beach, Fla.

Falwell owes apology to Muslims: ADL
NEW YORK - The AntiDefamation League (ADL) strongly condemned Rev. Jerry FalwelTs statement that the Prophet Mohammed "was a terrorist" and called for him to apologize to the followers of
Islam. Abraham H. Foxman, ADL national director, issued the following statement: "The Rev. Jerry Falwell has once again demonstrated his intolerance by his outrageous charge about the Prophet
Mohammed. He owes an apology to the millions of good people who follow the Muslim faith. As a man of the cloth, he should be working toward bringing faith communities closer together, not driving wedges through them."
