IND 2 December 26. 2001 Indy Federation launches new website

By RONA TRACHTENBERG Robyn Plaskoff, communications director at the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis, announced that her organization is about to officially launch its new web site for the Indianapolis Jewish community that is located online at www.jfgi.org. The Federation has been working diligently on this project for the past two to three months. Now that it is finally up and running, they are very proud of it because, "This newest tool will help further our goal of promoting the general welfare of the Jewish community and ensuring the creative survival and continuity of the Jewish people. It is a fairly interactive website

that will propel our community into the new decade." United Jewish Communities designed a web portal system so that each Federation could create its own affordable, eye-catching website. The final product, known as FedWeb, enables each federation to have a full website with both local and syndicated material. The original design, which was beta-tested at four federations, won awards for design and functionality. Currently 25 federation websites are up and running, with at least 25 more preparing to launch. Plaskoff explained how the community can benefit. "We have 10 to 15 differ-

ent Jewish newswin.s that autontitic&lly gel updated three times a day. So, anyone wanting up-to-the-minute honest information about what is going on in Israel can log onto our website and read the real news as it is being posted by these news sources. "Benefactors now have the ability to donate money online through our secure monetary transaction link. You can also sign-up for programs, events, or even volunteer right on our website. You can search and read information on all the upcoming UJC missions to Israel. By clicking on 'career resources' you can further your career by reading articles on writing a better resume

and interviewing skills, as well as searching a national listing of job openings in the Jewish world. "We have five community forums where people can express their opinions, share their thoughts and learn from each other: Indianapolis Jewish History, Our Community, Current Events, Woman to Woman and Israel insights. We also have the capability to set up live, realtime chat discussions. The Jewish life button, she said, links to such features as: local Shabbat candle lighting times, weekly Torah parsha summaries, Jewish cooking recipes, holiday descriptions, lifecycle/rituals and a list of all Jewish youth organizations.

She said the most useful item is the free e-cards. The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis has arranged for its website visitors to perform this function without cost to the user. "Other useful information," Plaskoff said, "includes an events' calendar with search capability by organization, date, and demographics (single, senior, teen). The community directory links all the Indianapolis synagogues, agencies, and local Jewish organizations in one convenient

online location. "Statistics have demonstrated that during the first month of being online, the site got 338 unique visitors with an average of 754 "hits" per day and 22,000 pages being viewed. The average length of stay was 12 minutes. "If visitors take a few minutes to register at the website, they will be rewarded with up-to-date e-mail messages on important Federation news and events."
