Following services, there will be a box lunch and discussion on interfaith marriage and conversion. The box lunch fee is $6 per person. Diamant will read from her new novel, "The Red Tent," at 9:30 am. Sunday, Oct. 11. The novel is based on the biblical story of Dinah, with a discussion on the process of writing midrash as faction. A book signing will follow. This program is free. Other books by Diamant include "Choosing a Jewish Life," "Living a Jewish Life," "The New Jewish Baby Book" and "The New Jewish Wedding Book." Her articles have been published in the Boston Globe Magazine, Hadassah and Self. She lives in Newton, Mass., with her husband and daughters. Temple has new full-time cantor
SOUTH BEND — Temple Beth-EI here has a student cantor, Janet Leuchter, who is pursuing a master's degree in sacred music at Hebrew Union College in New York City. Rabbi Morley Feinstein, quoted in the South Bend Tribune, said the synagogue has had full-time cantors before, so Leuchter is part of the development here of a renewed interest in tradition, with musical liturgy an important part of prayer. Leuchter is one of the student cantors filling in until the temple can build up the dollars to hire a permanent, fulltime cantor. She is the second student cantor at the temple, serving the congregation once a month and during the High Holidays. She began her service in South Bend in September 1997, and will continue through May 1999, Feinstein said. Leuchter grew up in Vineland, N.J., where her parents, Conservative Jews, were active more in Zionism and refugee resettlement than in synagogue life. She studied piano and guitar, sang classical oratorios, opera and klezmer music. She studied history at the University of Pennsylvania and did not begin training to become a cantor until she was in her 40s. Her growing interest in synagogue life led her into the world of cantorial music. She appreciates the historical context in which she finds herself. She has committed herself through research, to preserving some of the Yiddish religious songs that were
widely current before the turn of the century, but are little known today.She says she has been able to identify only
about 100 songs among the far larger body of music she is
certain existed.
Leuchter says she will contribute to Jewish knowledge through her master's degree project of creating a concert of Yiddish religious songs that will appeal to a modern audience while retaining their
original integrity.
She sees this effort as her part in rescuing part of a culture that was murdered in the
