OF A CENTURY: The speeches were touching, the crowd was happy, the food was delicious and the funds raised were given gladly. Sylvia and Mike Blain were the honorees at the Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis' gala dinner and 24th Anniver-

sary party at the Radisson Hotel on June 11. A well-dressed crowd of about 260 attended the elegant affair, where Rabbi Ronald Gray was the keynote speaker. Rabbi Gray earlier, 1970-1985, occupied the pulpit at B'nai Torah Congregation. Now he is executive vice president of Boys Town Jerusalem, an institution supporting and educating impoverished youngsters in Israel. Rabbi Gray, in his sparkling speech, held the interest of everyone in the room, all supporters of the Hebrew Day School that he imagined and conceptualized here, in Indianapolis. In his talk, Rabbi Gray related the first steps toward realization of his dream, the school. He told of the first check received, described the

first class room and the first problems 24 years ago in creating the excellent learning institution, numbering nearly 300 students today. Diplomas of successfully finishing their education at HAI were handed out to Maksim Averbukh, Yuri Fertman, Megan Herman, Amy Hoffman, Becky Kantin, Diana Khmarina, Diana Kogan and Swetlana Peysekhman. Peter Weisz, chairperson for the 25th Anniversary Committee, introduced the newest endeavor of the school: the writing of a Torah. A scribe, Rabbi Gidon Nitzun, wrote the first word, "Boereshis" onto a clear parchment scroll in the room, while everybody watched with bated breath. Mr. Nitzun's hand movements, as he wrote the sacred word were visible simultaneously on a huge white screen, via an overhead projector. For the coming year, until the 25tK — Silver Anniversary — of the school's existence, this Torah will be written. Toward the constant maintenance of the school, which are not covered by tuition expenses, letters, words and passages written irtto the new Torah will be sold and purchasers' names permanently displayed in the school building. Sylvia and Mike Blain, the HAI Award recipients this year, were lauded for the many good deeds they do in the community of Indianapolis. The acceptance remarks of them both brought sporadic laughter into the room. All the teachers honored Sylvia and Mike with a choir

of their own, singing tribute to them on the stage. Friends and relatives joined the crowd at this event to honor the Blains. Among them were their daughter-in-law, Julie and son, Zvi Blobstein, with children Kinneret and Shoshana, all from Efrat Israel. Another son. Dr. David Blain, came with his wife, Susan and theirchildren Jennifer, Ezra and Rachel, came from Mount Laurel, N.J.; Miriam and Daniel Blain from Cleveland. Also attending the party were Mike's sister, Miriam, with husband Paul Fleisher, Laguna Hills, Calif and Sylvia's sister, Nancy Carvotta, Rochester, N.Y.; as well as Judy Wayland-Smith, Oneida, N.Y., and Karen Bremenstul, Dexter, Mich. Upon leaving the hall, each guest received an artful wall calendar, a creation of Peter Weisz, listing Jewish holidays and upcoming local events, colorfully decorated with Jewish symbols and signed paintings by the students of the academy. NEW LIFE: Congratulations to Ruth and Leon Nitsun

and to Chassidah and Hermann Levi, who became grandparents and greatgrandparents, respectively in St. Louis. Gavin and Pnina Nitzun became the parents of a boy, Meir Simcha, on Nov. 26, 1994. The Nitsuns' other children are Dovid, Devorah, Yocheved and Michal. The other set of grandparents are Marcia and Avi Glasser. CELEBRATION IN NORTH CAROLINA: Helen Engel's grandson had his bar mitzvah in Charlotte, N.C., on the weekend of June 9. Her grandson, Robie, son of Gloria and Rick Peper, celebrated his coming of age in the large Charlotte synagogue.
