Appeal made for Israeli girl
Recital
In an effort to save the life of an Israeli girl, Indianapolis residents have raised more than $3,000 for a lung transplant for her. Rabbi Shlomo Crandall of Congregation B'nai Torah urged local Jews to contribute to the fund for Ruth Atun, 8, who suffers from severe cystic fibrosis. Funds are being solicited for her in Israel as well. Doctors say the transplant is her only hope. She came with her mother, Rachel, to St. Louis, to be evaluated for the transplant. Accompanying them was Ruth's physician, Dr. Eitan Kerem, chief of the cystic fibrosis unit at Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. The costs of the operation can exceed $700,000. Ruth has won praise in Israel for her courage and her sense of humor. Her parents, Rachel and Ben Atun are the source of her strength.
At one point Ruth said, "I am a very strong gill. Sometimes I even overwhelm the doctors. My strength is in my thoughts and imagination. Only yesterday I had to have a very painful blood test. "I closed my eyes and imagined that my hand was made of iron. I imagined this so strongly that I really did not Leadership Continued from page 2 board and 35/35 for Young Leadership. The survey appeared to endorse the JCRC's commitment to represent the community on social issues. That is, 70 to 89 percent of respondents in each of the three primary groups think the Jewish community should be politically active to fight child abuse, combat drug abuse, support affordable housing for lowincome people, reduce infant mortality, combat AIDS and AIDS discrimination, pro-

mote women's equality issues and support environmental issues. Respondents indicated they oppose prohibition of abortions, oppose government sponsorship of religious symbols on government property, oppose prayer in public schools and support choice within public school districts. The overwhelming number of respondents felt there was "very little" or "some" anti-Semitism, a finding that has been consistent in recent years.
