Quick service, no waiting
By GISELA WEISZ TEL.: (317) 255-5019 FAX: (317) 255-1660 THE STUMPER GOT STUMPED: The Indianapolis Jewish community was joy-
fully astounded Dy the news of a $1 million donation to establish a Jewish High School in the city. How do you flabbergast someone who flabbergasted the community? This is how: There was a meeting early Thursday morning, Oct. 18, where the first payment of $1 million was given over to the board of the Hebrew Academy Foundation. The donors are 35-year-old Roger Grass and his wife, Laurel, newcom-
ers to Indianapolis. Grass owns Reliable Drugs. The only condition to their donation is that the fund go toward establishing a Jewish high school in Indianapolis. While the foundation board members, Sheldon Friedman, Hart Hasten, Edward Hasten, Marvin Mitchell, Seymour Schwartz, Zoltan Weisz and Peter Weisz discussed the procedure with Roger Grass, Mark Hasten, and Dr. Stephen Leapman — Hart sneaked out of the room. No one knew what he was up to, but shortly after he returned, the telephone rang. The phone's loudspeaker was on, so everyone could hear the caller ask: "May I speak to Roger Grass?" Grass picked up the phone and answered: "Yes, this is he." The voice in essence said: "This is Elie Wiesel. I am calling you from Boston to commend and congratulate you upon your generous donation to the Hebrew High School in Indi-
anapolis and wish you and the school the best." Roger was speechless for a moment — flabbergasted. Then he quickly recovered, thanked the Nobel laureate for his good wishes and immediately returned the credit to the caller, saying Wiesel was the one who inspired him. Roger and his wife — who have three young sons—were at the Academy's yearly fund raising dinner in June this year. Keynote speaker Wiesel's words lauding Jewish education touched many in the room. The Grasses responded generously.
