Critic's Comer By Charles Epstein z

'Passage to India'breathtaking

Every once in a while a movie comes along that takes your breath away, a movie so well done that to say it is marvelous is an understatement. The film A Passage To India is a film of gargantuan Epstein proportions. One is immediately grabbed and held tenderly in its majesty. The scope of this movie is tremendous. The man responsible for this most luxurious and captivating film is none other than film genius David Lean. He wrote the screenplay from E.M. Forster’s novel. The last credit given is “Directed and Edited By David Lean.” His elegant touch is manifested throughout the movie, This man, David Lean, has to be the English-speaking world’s Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Kagemusha). A Passage To India is another masterpiece of David Lean to add to his others which include The Bridge Over The River Kwai, Hobson's Choice, In Which We Serve, The Sound Barrier, Lawrence Of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, and Great Expectations. This is a beautiful film, beautifully photographed, beautifully acted and expertly directed. The music is by Maurice Jarre. There is no doubt A Passage To India will be nominated for Oscars in many categories and most certainly will win more than one. The cast is first class with Alec Guineas being the only household name recognizable. He portrays a very strange and laid back religious Indian leader. A lot of humor stems from the delivery of this most gifted actor. Victor Banerjee plays an Indian doctor. His mild manner and charm are impressive. James Fox is his Indoor picnic set in Ft Wayne FORT WAYNE - A Sabbath indoor picnic will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at Congregation B’nai Ja'cob. Seating will be on the floor or at tables; participants are asked to bring their own blankets. Services will follow at 7:30. Michael Beachkofsky to be Bar AAitzvah TERRE HAUTE - Michael Beachkofsky will become Bar Mitzvah in services at 10 a m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at the United Hebrew Congregation. He is the son of Nancy and David Beachkofsky.

English friend in a country where East does not mix with West. Their friendship in that prejudicial world is heart tugging. Peggy Ashcroft plays Mrs. Moore who becomes a kind of folk hero to the Indians. This crafty veteran is most unique in her portrayal of an old woman who believes in kindness and the golden rule. And the jewel Judy Davis is absolutely fascinating in

a Meryl Streep role that thank goodness Meryl Streep

did not play. Judy Davis is - superb as the young innocent q English lady who has her % problems in India. -

A Passage To India is an § unbelievable short two hours and 45 minutes of gorgeous entertainment. With all its splendor and magnificence this film is still just a story about such unneccessary prejudicial circumstances.
