Stiff Fines And Jail Terms Seen In Kosher Violations
Rabbi Compares Feminists To Jezebel
NEW YORK - What are believed to be the largest fines against firms for selling as kosher non-kosher products have been levied against four firms, two of which were charged with misdemeanors which could bring their owners as much as a year’s imprisonment. The firms facing criminal charges are Rachleff Kosher Provisions, Inc., whose trade name is Royal Crown, and
Georgetown Kosher Meats, Inc. Their owners were booked for appearances in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Jan. 24. The two firms face civil penalties of $38,400 and $35,800 respectively. The two others are Kagan Meat and Poultry, Woodbridge, NY and Henry’s Delicatessen on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. They have been fined $50,000 and $25,800 respectively.
Moscow Judge Reached
By MAURIE H. ORODENKER NORRISTOWN, PA. - (P-O) —U.S. Rep. Lawrence Coughlin telephoned a judge in Moscow (USSR) this week in hopes of convincing him to allow a jailed Soviet Jew to emigrate to Israel. But the Russian jurist was not impressed. In fact, the judge yeUed and screamed on the phone, and then hung up. A RUSSIAN translator placed the call for the congressman. While the judge was very angry and said he would not speak with Rep. Coughlin about the case, the congressman viewed the call a success. He said it was the first time in many attempts that he has actually been able to get through. Rep. Coughlin had a private number, presumably for the judge’s chambers. He said the judge certainly has to have the impression now that there is concern on the part of many people about Soviet Jews and Yulf Edelshtein. The case involved
26-year-old Edelshtein, a Moscow electronics engineers and Hebrew teacher, who with his wife, Tatianna, first were refused permission to emigrate to Israel in 1980. On Sept. 4, Edelshtein was arrested on charges of narcotics possession, which he disputes. He currently is in Pronza Prison in Moscow awaiting trial. REP. COUGHLIN, who was chairman of a 1984 vigil in which 150 members of the House of Representatives gave speeches urging religious freedom for Soviet Jews, said he was contacted about Edelshtein by a local group working in behalf of Soviet Jewry. One member of the group had met Edelshtein in Moscow several years ago and maintained the contact. Rep. Coughlin said he had intended to ask mercy for Edelshtein and permission that he and his wife be allowed to leave and emigrate to Israel.
TORONTO — An Orthodox rabbi who is also a professor of philosphy had some harsh words for Blu Greenberg and Norma Joseph whom he indirectly likened to Jezebel when he said that Orthodox Judaism’s battle with feminist or other reform is “the old confrontation between the prophet Elijah and Jezebel.” IN A LECTURE ENTITLED, “Deformation of Religion by Feminist Reformation,’’ Rabbi J. Immanuel Schochet said that feminist reform such as counting women for minyans or having women participate in Torah-readings "are not only a denial of Jewish tradition but a perversion of common sense,” according to a report of his talk in The Canadian Jewish News. He was most severe when he asserted that “to follow personal inclinations or decisions, regardless of how sincere and well-intentioned, if those do not conform to halacha, then they do not constitute worship of God but selfworship.” AS TO BLU GREENBERG, wife of Rabbi Irving (Yitz) Greenberg, who herself is an author and lecturer of note, and Norma Joseph, the rabbi of Kielcer Congregation had this to
say:
“The modern jezebels that we criticize are women like Blu Greenberg or Norma Joseph. In their writings and talks they present them-

selves as members of the Orthodox tradition * while simultaneously denying the authenticity J and authority of halacha. Our quarrel is with ft those who speak with forked tongues and 9 demand a new Shulchan Aruch for which they and their cohorts want to establish the § criteria.” a

RABBI SCHOCHET HAD A question for the ^ women, according to the Canadian paper. “Do j? you not already have enough mitzvot,” he 9 asked, “enough duties and prohibitions, that ^ you look to add new ones?” He said he wished - “That they would observe first the obligations ® already incumbent upon them before looking
for others.”
The rabbi, who is on the faculty of Humber College, compared religion to other disciplines. He said that "when dealing with revelation, just as when dealing with logic or mathematics, there are no such things as specific male or female issues. The sole question is whether certain conditions or actions conform to the reality of halacha (revelation) or truth or not.” He then said that the Talmudic tradition that established the principles of minyan and Torah-readings "is the very same tradition which excludes and prohibits female participation therein.”
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Julius Weiss, former president of PEF-Israel Endowment Funds, died here at the age of 90. An attorney, he was a founder of the Palestine Emergency Fund along with Justice Brandeis, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise and others. As late as a week before his demise, he attended two PEF meetings.
He earned a Purple Heart while serving with the Army in World War I. In the death notice in The New York Times he was characterized as: "His life was one of supreme dedication and devotion to the American community, the Jewish people and the State of Israel.”

Rabbi Isn't Superstitious, Or Is He?
TORONTO — Rabbi Erwin Schild doesn’t believe in superstition but he suggested that the Mt. Sinai Hospital, which skips the 13th floor, might affix a little red ribbon over every door.” It was clear that the spiritual | leader of Adath Israel CongregaItion was spoofing, but he did (hit on a sensitive proclivity I among Jews, especially those ■who often declare the words, Schild “Kein ayin hora,” avoidance of the evil eye. HE WAS RECALLED TO this Jewish propensity when he noted that the Toronto General Hospital did have a 13th floor, but not Mt. Sinai. He asked, “Are Jews more superstitious than the average non-Jewish population?” He answered his own question. “Probably”. He wrote in his bulletin: “In the Jewish hospital, after 12 comes 14. I don’t know how it is in condominiums and apartments in Etobicoke and Scarboro, but in those located in “Jewish” areas, there is no 13th floor. Are Jews more superstitious than the average nonJewish population? Probably. Would a Jewish family rent an apartment or buy a condo on the 13th floor? And just imagine the excitement of a Jewish mother, if her precious son, the accountant — zoll kein ayin hora im nisht shaden — were to have his gallbladder operation — nisht oif unz gesogt — while on the 13th floor of the hospital? You want to tempt fate? RABBI SCHILD EXPLAINED the persistence of Jewish persistence. He wrote, “A
few generations back most Jews lived in culturally unsophisticated countries where folkways and superstitions went together and where the line between a legitimate religious observance and superstition was not clearly drawn. When transplanted to a new more sophisticated environment, the customs based on superstitious beliefs are retained even when authentic religious observances are cast aside.” He then related this account: “I remember Rabbi Price telling me about the lady who was so terribly worried that her son was going to marry a young lady with the same name as she herself — which might bring them bad luck and in point of fact is not recommended by some religious authorities. ‘Does your son keep Shabbes?’ the Rabbi inquired. With a little embarrassment the lady confessed that the son’s religious scruples were not strong enough to keep him from working on Shabbat, and further questioning revealed that even the lady’s own husband, for economic reasons, so she said, worked on the Sabbath. ‘Nu’, said Rabbi Price, ‘if breaking the Shabbat, of which the Torah says that he who desecrates it deserves to die, is not doing him any harm, and you are not even afraid that it might, then you really have no reason to fear that marrying a girl with the same name as his mother will harm him. Let him marry the girl, and tell him to keep Shabbes!’ THE RABBI THEN had one final word: “Well, personally I am, Kein ayin hora, not superstitious. It might be a good idea though if the hospital would affix a little red ribbon over every door. Couldn’t hurt, could it?”

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request by the city to stay an order by U.S. District Judge James B. Moran lifting the ban, which was imposed to alleviate congestion at the airport. City aviation officials told Moran that the permit had been canceled seven times in the last three years because of high volume at O'Hare. Moran acted in response to a class-action lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the Jews for Jesus and its director, Jhan Moskowitz.
