This May Be The Year Of Years, 7983 Football Preview
By SHEL WALLMAN The myth continues that Nice Jewish Boys rarely, if ever, play football and most certainly not in J the pros or on mg ^ the major col- _ ai lege level. The acceptance of this myth is so pervasive that many Jewish Wallman fans believe it. So pervasive that most Jewish players believe it, assuming that they are the rare exceptions, unaware of the growing role of their brethren on the nation’s girdirons. Let us take a look at the 1983 prospects for Jewish players performing on the Division IA level, the major college football powers, and in the NFL. Additional players will be brought to your attention throughout the season as they become known to us.
THE OFFENSE Backfield Doug Samuels (Jr) - Utah State - 6:2, 208 from Atherton, CA. Doug was the starting QB for the Aggies as a frosh and soph, but the coaches weren’t satisfied with last year’s 5:6 losing record and may replace Samuels with a highly regarded JUCO transfer. Doug had fine stats, completing 51% of his passes, 12 going for touchdowns. Steve Grober (Fr) - West Virginia - 6:1,193 from Somerville, N.J. Senior QB Jeff Hosteltler is an All-American candidate, so Steve will learn from the bench. Richard Shure (Fr) - Maryland - 6:0, 200 from Randallstown, Md. Rich was the Baltimore Area Player of the Year, selected by all three local papers and an All-State FB who led the State in yards gained for two years. But Coach Ross likes to break his players in slowly so Rich’s playing time will probably be limited to the specialty teams. Receivers John Frank (Sr) - Ohio State - 6:3, 216 TE from Mt. Lebanon, PA. As a junior, John was All-Big 10, first-team, and is projected as an A/A candidate this season despite the Spartans’ limited aerial game. James Samuels (Jr) - Utah State - 6:3, 220 TE from Atherton, CA. James (Doug’s twin brother) was the Aggies leading receiver as a soph with 30 receptions, good for 462 yards, and 4 TD’s. Gene Feingoid (Sr) - Temple - 5:11, 193 WR from Cedarhurst, N.Y. After three years of back-up action, Gene is expected to be a starter in 83. Adam Goldberg (Jr) • San Jose State - 5:10,176 WR from Aptos, CA. Adam will see action but how much is unclear at this time. Linemen
Mike Berger (Sr) - Temple - 6:2, 260 DC from Syracuse, N.Y. Mike was named AllAmerican, honorable mention, in 1982 by Football News and was awaixled his school’s Most Courageous Athlete award after fighting his way back from serious knee surgery. Phil Greenfield (Jr) - Missouri - 6:0, 245 OC from St. Louis, MO. Phil first made the Tigers as a walk-on and is now expected to start. Scott Wachenheim (Sr) - Air Force - 6:3,231 OT from Woodland Hills, CA. Scott is a 3-year starter and the top returning lineman for the Falcons. Eric Schwartz (Jr) - Texas at El Paso - 6:3, 275 0T from Charlotte, N.C. Eric was a NG at Memphis State as a frosh, an All-American, first-team, OT while at NW Mississippi Junior College and is expected to start as a junior for UTEP. Dave Baran (Jr) - UCLA - 6:5, 260 OC from Newfield, N.J. Dave was tried at OT and TE but probably won the starting center job in spring practice. The following linemen are expected to see reserve action in 1983: Mitch Wachman (Fr) - Michigan State - 6:3, 257 OG from Lauderdale Lake, FL; Mike Fine (Fr) - Air Force - 6:3, 215 from Granada Hills, CA; Bob Hirschfeld (FR) - Tulane - 6:1, 250 OC from Miami, FL; Mike Bernner (Soph) - Turgers - 6:1, 280 OT from Winthrop, MA; and Glen Fine (Soph) - Rutgers - 6:3, 235 OT from Wayne, N.J. THE DEFENSE Linemen Ivan Lesnik (Sr) - Arizona - 6:2, 255 NG from Chalfont, PA. Ivan was All-Pac 10, firstteam, and Football News All-American, honorable mention, in 1982. Ivan can bench press over 500 lbs. and is an All-American candidate for 1983. Jeff Glasser (Fr) - UCLA - 6:5, 235 DT from Houston, TX. Jeff was named Addidas All-American, first-team, and National High School Coaches All-American, first-team. He has 4.95 speed and will be a red-shirt unless he wins the 2nd team DT slot. Bruce Mark (Soph) - Wake Forest - 6:2, 250 DE from Woodmere, N.Y. Bruce was a P/T starter in 1982 but will have the job to himself this season. Bruce has worked hard after being shifted from tight-end. The following linemen are expected to see reserve action in 1983: Bruce Mesner (Fr) - Maryland - 6:5, 250 DT from Harrison, N.Y. and Neal Sampson (Soph) - Maryland - 6:3, 235 NG from Yorktown Hgts., N.Y. Linebackers Mike Boren (Sr) - Michigan - 6:2, 225 from Columbus, OH. Mike was All-Big 10, secondteam, last year and the Wol-
IVAN LESNICK ...potential All-American verines’ leading tackier. Robert Heller (Jr) - Purdue - 6:1, 225 from Villa Park, CA. Robert was a JUCO AllAmerican at Fullerton College and is expected to start for the Boilermakers. Mark Korff (Jr) - Florida - 6:1, 225 from Granada Hills, CA. Mark was an All-Califor-nia JUCO at West Los Angeles Community College and is expected to start at inside linebacker for the Gators. Dan Cohen (Jr) - Eastern Michigan - 5:10, 195 from N. Farmington, MI. Dan became a starter last year after shifting over from safety. The following LB’ers are expected to see reserve action in 1983: Todd Hershman (Sr) - Temple - 6:2,195 from Beach Channel, N.Y. and Lewish Kornberg (Jr) - Duke - 5:11, 200 from Durham, N.C. Secondary Joe Kraus (Jr) - Maryland - 5:10, 180 from Kensington, Md., Joe is a transfer from Penn State and is expected to start at right-cornerback. Jeff Cohen (Sr) - Michigan - 6:0, 195 from N. Farmington, MI. Jeff is Dan’s brother and could start for the first time as a fifth year senior. Ken Granader (Jr) - Toledo - 5:10, 185 from Birmingham, MI. Ken has switched from RB to strong safety and could become a starter. THE NFL The pro picture remains remarkably upbeat. Veterans include All-Pro OT, Ed Newman of Miami, former AllPro, Lyle Alzado (M) of Los Angeles, LB’er Steve Shull of Miami, recently placed on the injured reserve list with a knee injury, lineman Brad Edelman of New Orleans, a member of the 1982 All-Rookie team, Larry Rubens, a back-up OC for Green Bay and A1 Steinfeld, a reserve lineman for Kansas City. As of this writing, three rookies remain on their team rosters and can be expected to play this season in the NFL. They are Sid Abramowitz of Tulsa, drafted in the 5th round by the Baltimore Colts, Ken Kaplan of New Hampshire, drafted in the 6th round by Tampa Bay and Bill Lichtenstein of Tulane, a freeagent with Denver.
