Teen Scene By Todd Zeldin and Susie Goldstein

Hi! We’re taking over as writers of Teen Scene. It will be hard to write as interesting and informative columns as Dan and Danya, but we will do our best. This is your column. If you have anything to say, just let us know. Opinions, criticisms and comments are welcomed. Also, if you know of a Jewish teen who has done something exceptional, nominate him or her for Teen of the Week. Note: All Jewish organizations should let us know of upcoming events. Teen Scene is great (and free!) advertising for your chapter. Another important purpose of Teen Scene is to let adults know that the teen Jewish community is thriving! As always, USY had a great turnout for their annual High Holiday services. This year’s services were written by vicepresident Guy Kaissar. In attendance were Barry Mirkin, Martin Nitsun, Sandy Smith, Dan Blain, Bennet Ackerman, Todd Zeldin, Jon Bernstein, Lisa Goldberg, Joe Rucbenstein and Elise Frankovitz among many, many more. FJYO assisted JNF in updating their records by conducting phone surveys. Some of the hard working teens were Amy Cohen, Lisa Goldberg, Barry Mirkin, Sandy Smith and Guy Kaissar. Ellen Katzmen, FJYO’s devoted advisor, also helped out, DATES TO REMEMBER: North Central Homecoming October 15,16 BBG: Elections October 10 USY: Hayride October 9 Trip to Spencer Teachers Conference NCSY: Trip to Chicago October 28,29 Central East Convention November 12-14 Young Judea: LTS, Chicago October 16 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: Heidi Levin (sweet sixteen!) They felt that society could be improved because men can reason, and, with education, they can make rational decisions. Assuming that the wise men who wrote the Declaration of Independence were correct — Why do pharmacists continue to sell Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules under-the-counter? And worse, why do people continue to buy them? Why do people drink and drive though the highest statistical cause of fatal accidents is drunken driving? Why did the Pope meet with murderer and terrorist Yassir Arafat? Why were hundreds of women and children killed executionstyle in Lebanon? QUOTES OF THE WEEK: Give me a fish, and I'll eat for a day. Teach me to fish, and I’ll eat for a lifetime. If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. That’s it until next week! Susie and Todd

Teaching Kollel In South Bend SOUTH BEND - Torah Umesorah, The National Society for Hebrew Day Schools, this week launched a new Teaching Kollel program in conjunction with the South Bend Hebrew Day School. The project is the third of its kind in a North American City. Last year, a similar project was started in Winnipeg, and in 1980 the first Teaching Kollel opened in Minneapolis. CONSISTING of four young married scholars who devote their entire day to teaching and studying Torah, the South Bend program is led by Rabbi Yisroel Gettinger, spiritual leader of the Hebrew Orthodox Congregation in that city. The four scholars begin their day teaching at the local Hebrew Day School, and then study together in the afternoon, doing advanced Talmudic research in the traditional Kollel style. Evenings are devoted to adult education programs for the entire community. Joining Rabbi Gettinger on the team of scholars — are Rabbi David Bernstein, Rabbi Yerachmiel Donowitz, and Rabbi Yoel Yormark. Avi Shulman of Torah Umesorah, who laid the groundwork for the Teaching Kollel concept, is enthusiastic about its future. “Like the other projects in Minneapolis and Winnipeg, this is a landmark achievement for the South Bend Jewish Community in many different ways. First and foremost, it provides the Hebrew Day School with dedicated, talented and highly-motivated young personnel, which it so direly needs. Second, it introduces communities which are distant from the major centers of Jewish education to the idea of a Kollel with its advanced Jewish learning program, and third, the Teaching Kollel uplifts the level of education for all segments of the population — young and old”. IN EACH of the communities, the young men and their families have been asked to stay for a two-year period. The South Bend Kollel is a storybook success tale for Torah Umesorah and its staff. Over the past decade, the organization has been sponsoring SEED (Summer E<location Environmental Development) programs throughout the country, in which young men from the major Yeshivos spend their summer vacation in smaller Jewish communities teaching, lecturing and learning. One of the cities to which Torah Umesorah sent a SEED contingent was South Bend. The leader of the group was a Rabbi Gettinger. The rabbi and the community liked each other, and soon Rabbi Gettinger was offered the pulpit of the Hebrew Orthodox Congregation. It was Rabbi Gettinger who two years later succeeded in establishing the Teaching Kollel in South Bend. $
