Family Planning And Judaism Editor, POST and OPINION: It is very difficult to have a family in America today. Many women are neither physically nor emotionally capable of coping with the strains and pressures that a lack of family planning would entail. One could charge that a lack of family planning could lead to many nervous breakdowns and bankruptcy claims. Such feelings are very, very widespread in our country today. HOWEVER, LET US analyze the evidence. Medical doctors have concluded that there is a direct relationship between nervous disorders and birth control. Psychologists attribute emotional breakdowns to the practice. The damage done by birth control has been documented in numerous cases by doctors. The statistics are there to be compiled. The evidence is so clear that all who publicly encourage family planning would be forced to reverse their position. One may argue that many husbands are not financially able to support many children. However, one may also argue that G-d has been able to sustain the world and its inhabitants throughout world history and can provide for four billion people. There is unquestionably enough food on the planet to adequately feed all human beings. G-d can surely provide for one more child. MOREOVER, DOESN’T the act of producing a new child release all innate human love and feelings for others? If our own ancestors had thought of birth control, where would we be today? NORMAN KORB (Note — Mr. Korb is the son of Rabbi David Korb of the United Orthodox Hebrew Congregation. —R. G.)
