Swiss Returned Escaped German Jews
By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER Switzerland is a small country but a mean one. Only recently did it permit women to vote. In all wars, Switzerland has remained neutral beI cause it is the world’s banker. ' But during the Silver Nazi regime Switzerland was cruel to German Jews who tried to get into the country. This littleknown fact has been vividly dramatized by a non-Jewish Swiss film producer, Marcus Imhof, who has made one of the most moving moving pictures of recent times. “The Boat Is Full.” The movie accurately relays the way the Swiss deliberately transported back to Germany Jews who were able to smuggle themj selves out into that country. • The Forward’s David Mattis gives us a synopsis of the poignant creation which has already won many prizes and, Mattis hopes, will be widely patronized in this country so that the world will learn how nasty the Swiss have been, despite the fact that hundreds
of thousands of tourists, including many Jews who were unaware of the sorry record of the nation, have spent millions there.
Bourgiba A Moderate An Arab leader who really deserves the description, moderate, is Habib Bourgiba, of Tunis, even though he is called President for Life and allowed little genuine opposition in recent elections. The Jews of Tunisia were visited not so long ago by Marshall Weinberg, a view president of JDC. The Jewish population of the country shrank from 100,000 to 5500 after it went independent. Most of the emigres went to France and Canada rather than Israel. Those who remain are permitted to live Jewishly, but many of their needs are underwritten by the UJA via the JDC. There are two synagogues in Tunisia, the capital, and three in the province of Djerba. All of them reflect more ancient glory than contemporary activism. In Djerba, however, all Jewish children get a good Hebrew edu-
cation. The Lubavitch movement is strong there, and it effectively Judaizes many youngsters. Medical clinics and senior citizens’ residences are also funded by the Joint. At one home for the elderly, Weinberg’s hand was kissed by those who are appreciative of American Jewish generosity. One resident complained, however that his prosthetic foot doesn’t fit well. Weinberg said he’d look into the matter. (Simon Baker, in the Forward).
Rabbi Silver Writes There was a mistake in my column. Paul Novick, the 90year old, is editor of the Freiheit, the Marxist-leaning paper, not the one erroneously mentioned in the column. While writing, let me mention an unrelated matter that belongs in my column. The new Canadian ambassador to the U.S. is Jewish. His name is Alan Gottlieb and in the Algemeiner Journal, Jacob Rabinowitz writes that he works at his Jewishness. He’s a graduate of both Oxford and Harvard.
Moral Majority O.K. Al Chernin
ST. LOUIS - The Moral Majority issue which has divided the Jewish community found a top Jewish leader, the man who heads the American Jewish community’s community relations agency taking the side of Begin’s po-
sition that because they support Israel, they should be accepted as friends. Al Chernin, executive vice president of the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council, told a meeting here that “we don’t have to go
Mixed Feelings On The AWACS The decision of the U. S. Senate to approve President Reagan’s sale of AWACS radar airplanes to Saudi-Arabia has been received in Israel with mixed feelings. On the one hand, there is genuine alarm that these sophisticated, aircraft are to be placed in the hands of a country which — although Washington prefers to call it a moderate state — is dedicated to the destruction of Israel no less than the PLO. On the other hand, there is also a feeling of genuine relief at the result. If the Reagan program had been defeated in the Senate, the victory for the Israelis would have been a shallow one. Humiliated and rejected, the President would hardly have been in a mood to make even friendly gestures to Israel. Sale of the AWACS would have been prevented, but the Israelis would hardly have been in a position to make requests of their own and expect to have either the White House or the Pentagon respond with any consideration. This might be a “sour grapes” reaction, but it is one that is shared by most Israelis. Besides, the AWACS are not to be delivered until 1985. Much can happen before then. Indeed, the odds are that by that time the Saudi-Arabian Government Government will have fallen into the hands of an extremist Khomeini-type group, and the United States will be able to cancel the projected sale in good time. What the Israelis can’t undersUnd is why there was so much talk about the activity of the Jewish lobby while little seems to have been said about the ever so much more active (and effective) Saudi lobby, with the powerful backing of the oil interests and the aircraft manufacturers.—A.C.
to bed with Moral Majority. There are some issues with which we agree with them and others we’ll be fighting them on.” “So far,” he added, “they have played under the rules of the game.” Cemeteries Vandalized
BUFFALO — Our Jewish cemeteries here were vandalized. Two other cemeteries got the same treatment. “It happens every week,” the Buffalo Jewish Review was told by a cemetery maintenance employee. “They knock over a stone here and a stone there,” he said.

ft's The Real Thing By MARTIN MOSKOVITZ We are all very fortunate to be living in such a technological age. For instance, we can now experience such great scientific phenomena as talking Coke vending machines. at THE MACHINES WERE DEVELOPED n 4 in Atlanta and they’re already on their way y to bottlers in six different states. The ma- \ - AY chine also happens to have an extensive ' repertoire. It says, “Hi, I’m the talking ^ '■h vendor machine from Coca-Cola,” when wb W, you drop in your money. It sort of makes 1 -**'*’ -“you want to stand around and chat with Moskovitz the machine while you’re sipping your Coke. After you get your Coke, the machine says, “Thank you.” It also offers other choice bits of conversation such as “Sorry, Sold out.” Or, “You need to put in more money.” And, “Make your selection pleeeeease.” I DIDN’T READ ANYWHERE whether the machine hollers “ouch” if a disgruntled patron kicks it. Also, since Coke is imbibed in such copious quantities in Israel, no doubt these talking machines will find their way there shortly. I’m curious however, will the machines speak with a Sephardic accent or Ashkenazi? Besides, how do you say “ouch” in Hebrew?
