U.S. Jewish Community Cartel, Premium Placed On Conformity
LONDON — That the American Jewish community has developed into a form of cartel with a premium on conformity imposed by the setup of National Jewish organizations was the description by Seftoh Temkin, associate professor of Jewish History at the State University of New York at Albany. Writing about the emergence of the new organization, The Jewish Agenda, Prof. Temkin told readers of The Jewish Chronicle here that “Every or sizeable community has a combined fundraising body, usually referred to as ‘the Federation’, and the national organizations subsist not on the contributions of their adherents, but on allocations from the Federations. Without this system the great philanthropic works of American Jewry would scarce-

ly have been possible, but the system sets a premium conformity.” HE ADDED that “Only a small injection of controversy will poison an appeal; therefore it is better to keep a redundant organization on the list of beneficiaries rather than to risk the division in the camp which dropping it would provoke.” Without letting up, the history professor stated ihat “From the opposite angle, no beneficiary will want to rock the boat. Decision-making becomes a matter of manipulation by insiders; the rank-and-file come into the picture as recipients of the organization’s publicity, and the purpose of that publicity is largely self-praise.” AS FOR The New Jewish Agenda he said it was groping for new answers, and “working them out will be like threading one’s way through a minefield.” He added that “they threaten vested interest and even among the Jews of free America the siege mentality is still very potent.” He quoted from The New Jewish Agenda’s publicity to the effect that “We are Jews concerned with the retreat from social action concerns and the open discussion within the organized Jewish community. We wish to see the application of tifeun olam — the just ordering of human society — to American foreign and domestic policy,

and to the desperate quest for peace between Israel and its neighbors.” EARLIER in his article, he wrote he was doubtful as to “whether this new body will really emerge from the womb” and related that “not so long ago short shrift was made of a group of dissenters known as Breira”. In his analysis. Dr. Temkin took up retreat from liberalism in the Jewish community. He wrote: “We see discomfort with the new conservatism that has overtaken a community which prided itself and sometimes braved dislike on account of its liberalism. “But did that liberalism respond to an inherent Jewish outlook, or was it the product of a temporary situation that has since changed? The gleichschaltung of Jewish organizations has accompanied a change in the social and economic status of Jewish organizations, which by and large we have failed to note. “Long accustomed to being the victims of poverty and repression, surviving Jews do not realize that today they are numbered among the ‘haves’ of this world; and, long the victims of power wielded by others, they have not adjusted to a situation in which, through the State of Israel, they have become the wielders of power themselves and must face the criticisms which the exercise of power brings in its train.”

And the other a sign on a balcony bearing a message in three languages, English, Hebrew and Arabic, stating we are “Jews Not Zionists”.
