JERUSALEM - Elections next June with the Begin Government as caretaker until then was the political prospect as the Prime Minister found it impossible to resolve the question of salary raises for Israeli teachers and Finance Minister Yigael Hurvitz who opposed them resigned. He took with him several votes just enough to rob the government of a majority, and Mr. Begin called for early elections. Hurvitz who has fought a
losing rearguard action against inflation was determined to oppose the raise for the 60,000 Israeli teachers, even though he recognized that their average $200 monthly salary was hardly adequate. Almost 20 no confident votes in the Knesset have been held in recent months, and Mr. Begin has survived them with dwindling margins, the latest on Nov. 19, when the vote was 57-54.
Saturday Services Are Reintroduced
McKeesport, Pa. - a two-month experiment with Saturday morning services is being made by Temple B’nai Israel here. A one-hour service beginning at 10 a.m. is being held. Rabbi Leonard Winograd told his congregation in the
bulletin that the Saturday service was dropped at some point after World War II, but “now the wheel is taking another turn and more and more Reform temples are reinstituting Saturday morning worship.”
Pundits Anolyze New Election Probabilities Labor Victory Is Seen As Threat To Orthodox
What could happen in Israel if the Begin Government were to lose in the new elections, as most observers predict, was being discussed in American Zionist and leadership circles this week. If the Labor Alignment were to win a clear majority, which is a possibility, the advances of the religious segment of Israeli society, under Begin, would come under heavy attack. This could involve not only equality for Reform and Conservative Jews in Israel, but the Israel Law of Return, and of course the situation on the West Bank where a number of Orthodox settlements under Gush Emunim with the contrivance of the Begin government have been established. EVEN IF the Labor Alignment were forced to create a coalition in order to form a new government, its allies would be the left-wing groups, and the same approach would obtain, a retreat from ultraOrthodox goals. The National Religious Party, headed by Interior Minister Yosef Burg, was in the previous Labor Alignment, but observers see no chance for it being included in a new Labor coalition. The NRP has tended towards the right since joining the Begin Government. The possibility of a civil war is ruled out, but there is
no question but that there will be open confrontations when the Orthodox see their gains, as for instance in the new autopsy law, disappearing. The Orthodox have established a pattern of taking to the streets, and violence has occurred when what they consider a crucial issue was at stake. THE POSSIBILITY of a new party gaining enough of the seats in the Knesset to become a threat to the Labor Alignment is also being consi-
dered. Ezer Weizman has not stated what he would do since he was ousted from the likud, but a triumvirate of him, Moshe Dayan and Yitzhak Rabin would have formidable impact on the voters.
The populace will be looking for platforms from the parties which will attack Israel’s heavy problems, not only inflation and yerida, but all the plethora of illnesses which beset the Jewish state inl9Bl.
Rabbi Asks Lieberman To Reconsider On Jesus
MIRAMAR, FI. - Rabbi Paul Plotkin of Temple Israel of Miramar has written to cage star Nancy Lieberman to express the hope that the article in The Post and Opinion (P-O, Dec. 12) which described her Lieberman as believing in Jesus “has somehow misinterpreted or misquoted your true beliefs and that you are a loyal daughter of Israel.” He expressed the hope that the star of the Dallas Diamonds “will continue to be an inspiration and a role model to your people.” RABBI PLOTKIN suggest-
ed that she might want to continue the communication “perhaps,” he wrote, “to discuss whatever questions you have.” He referred to the penalty Moses paid for striking a rock to produce water when he had been told by God only to talk to it, and then answered the question why so minor an offense earned such a hard decree (barred for seeing the Holy Land). He referred to the Sages who said it was because “he was such a great person and people looked up to him, what he did affected many.” THE TONE of the rabbi’s letter was persuasive not accusatory.
Mike Wallace Threatened Over 60 Minutes Issue On Arabs
By JEAN HERSCHAFT NEW YORK - Mike Wallace of the CBS 60 Minutes program has been receiving threatening telephone calls to himself and his family as the result of a charge made on the Barry Farber WMCA radio talk program that he paid an Arab youth to throw a rock at an Israeli patrol so he could film it. Farber denied the accusation, and said the original account in an Israeli newspaper has since been withdrawn, and that he and his family have always been strongly pro-Israel. THE PROGRAM which will be aired shortly on CBS was designed to show how Arabs live in Israel. CBS has provided Wallace
and his family with round-the-clock protection, The Post and Opinion was told. On the Farber show, Wallace was accused also by callers-in of having converted to Christianity, among other criticism. He told The P-0 that he and his family have always been good Jews, and strongly pro-Israel. He said the producer of the forthcoming 60 Minutes on the Arabs in Israel, Barry Lando, is also a strong affiliated Zionist. THE CHARGES against Wallace where phoned in by a Victor Van Seer who said he represented a Jewish organization. This reporter got into the act when we called in to ask the credentials of the accuser. Farber seemed upset
by the question and responded that the national organization was as big as the American Jewish Committee or the American Jewish Congress, but later retracted. Farber wasn’t about to go into the question of whether as charged by one of the callers that Wallace had converted, and in response to another caller said the truth of such an accusation was irrelevant to the main issue — whether the Wallace show was based on a paid for performance by a 14-year-old Arab youth. THE ORIGINAL attack on Wallace appeared in a report in Maariv, Israel’s largest daily paper. The incident came to light when the Israel Defense Forces set limits to
coverage by the media after it was reported that the 14-year-old Arab had been paid to throw the rock at an army vehicle carrying Israeli Soldiers while Wallace’s crew cranked away at their cameras. Although the incident was shown not to be true, accounts of it had already appeared in the Washington Post and'Los Angeles Times. Wallace told The Post and Opinion that no one whether Maariv or the American papers had interviewed him or gotten a response from him. (Editor’s note: Excerpts from the Maariv article, which appeared on Nov. 14, have been translated and are being circulated. The P-0 received it with the hand-
written signatures of R.G. Leigh, J. Myers, A. Cosan, Lew Fisher and V.F. Gann, with the return address also in long hand as P.O. Box 7536, Menlo Park, Ca. 94025. A front page editorial appeared in Chavurah, the publication of the Jewish Federation of Waterbury, Ct. made the same accusations.) (For the record, we checked with the Conference of Presidents office and a spokesman said that the name “Victor Van Seer” was completely unknown, unlisted in its official booklet. Moreover, it had, as I had, “never heard of the “Jewish Public Affairs Council” the closest to it “Israel Public Affairs Council” does not list such an individual the Conference office said.)
