Passion Play Revisions Make Them Pro-Jewish
NEW YORK - A new approach to the problem of the hate spread by passion plays has been devised by two Roman Catholic scholars who propose 28 revisions in the text of the Oberammergau and other passion plays performed world-wide. The proposals by Dr. Leonard Widler, professor of Catholic Thought and Interreligious Dialogue at Temple University and Father Gerard Sloyan, professor of New Testament at Temple,
would transform the passion plays into examples “of philoSemitic” performances. They call for emphasizing the Jewishness of Jesus, his family, his disciples and his followers, depicting Pontius Pilate as the brutal tyrant that he was, and changing the character names which “unwarrantedly” impart negative qualities to Jews. ” The revisions have been issued by the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith.

A-Semitism Seen In Double Murder By RANDY MEDOFF MONSEY, N.Y. - Police are definitely not ruling out the possibility that the killer of Arnold Sohn, 50, and his wife Elaine, 47, was not an “anti-Semitic psychopath” who murdered the couple because they were Jewish. They were beaten to death in their suburban home here and police said it was the most brutal murder they had ever seen. Sohn had been struck repeatedly on the head with a blunt instrument and it was speculated that Mrs. Scrim first was forced to watch her husband being killed and then was drowned in the bath tub. Nothing had been stolen, so robbery as a motive has been ruled out.
— Jerusalem Post photo KIDS THE SAME EVERYWHERE — Youngsters are no different in Israel than anywhere else, so when the snow fell in Jerusalem, scenes such as this one were not uncommon. Stron gusts of wind, dropping temperatures and hailstorms heralded the advent of winter. The storm swept ashore one of two large construction barges at the Hadera jetty being built for die power station there and army helicopters rescued the 65 on the second barge. Farmers welcomed the heavy rain which fell in lower areas but there was considerable damage, including flooding and power outages in many cities.

Civil War Exacerbates Anti-Semitism
aid
By RABBI A.P. BLOCH
January 7,1864—The Daily
[id Examiner publish-
ed an article accusing an unnamed member of the Confederate House of Representatives of accepting a bribe of $3,000 from
Bloch three Jews for in obtaining permits to leave the Confederacy. The article offered no
evidence in support of the charge and based the report on rumor. In the highly inflamed atmosphere, which was becoming increasingly explosive as the war approached its disastrous end, Jew-baiting became the staple fare of many a respectable newspaper. Judah Benjamin, Secretary of State of the Confederacy, was singled out as the principal target of attack by frustrated individuals searching for a scapegoat. Latent anti-Jewish prejudices burst forth in the rage and passion of that
moment.
THEOLOGICAL hostility, deeply entrenched in fundamentalist Christianity, added fuel to the burning hatred of Jews. Judah Benjamin was denounced as the “Judas Iscariot” of the South. It was alleged that Christian prayers were unheeded by heaven so long as Jew sat in the cath inet. If this sounds incomprehensible, one need only recall a recent statement of Rev. Bailey Smith, president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Referring to the practice of inviting rabbis, among clergymen of other faiths, to deliver prayers at political conventions, he commented: “God Almighty does not hear the prayers of a Jew”. The South had no monopoly on anti-Jewish prejudices which were rampant in the North as well. Nevertheless, the precedent for rabbinical
prayers at congresional sessions was set in Washington on Feb. 1.1860. Soon after the publication by the Richmond Examiner of the charge of bribery accepted by a Confederate representative, Congressman Foote, an outspoken enemy of ludah Benjamin introduced a resolution calling for ah investigation of the matter. A committee was duly appointed and its report was submitted on January 25, 1864. The charge was groundless. THE EDITOR disclaimed responsibility for the article. It was printed, he alleged, without his knowledge but he made no apology. We may add as a footnote to the affair of Congressman Foote. He was expelled from the legislature on February 27,1865. for having attempted an illegal crossing of the border to the Union.

Only the Harold Clicks are permanent residents here, as a handful of Canadian Jews and Israelies come and go, holding jobs with the government and in other transient occupations. The Mohel was Rabbi D. Postone of Calgary. The minyan was made up, according to The Canadian Jewish News here, of couples from Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet, Edmonton, ami as far away as St. Catherines.
