Arabs To Be A Majority in Israel
By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER In Israel there’s one birth annually for every 40 Arabs;
for Jews, it’s 17. This means that in 30 years Israel will have an Arab majority if the territorial situation remains unchanged. This is one of the
Silver conclusions arrived at by two Hebrew University professors, Dov Friedlander and Calvin Goldscheider, in their English book on the “Demographic Danger.” The Arabization will acceler-

ate if Israelis continue to leave the country (yerida) in such great numbers. (M. Dover, in the Yiddisher Kempfer). Kill Them! A new high in Jewish fanaticism was reached in the Meah Shearim section of Jerusalem occupied by the Neturai Karta, who regard Zionism as blasphemy and the government of Israel as non-existent. Recently, tax collectors came to the area to check out revenues and possibly delinquencies. So up went a sign in the area which read: “Men meg

zay hargenen on a din un on a mishpat,” which translates, "You may kill them (the collectors) without expecting judgment or retribution” (i.e., with impunity). The sign says that such behavior would be a mitzvah from the Torah. (M. Dover, in the Yiddisher Kempfer). In Hawaii Jewish life in Hawaii flourished after World War II when many GIs served there and fell in love with the area and some of its residents. Jet airplanes also contributed to the growth of the Hawaiian Jewish community, we learn from a series of articles on our farout state by Tzirl Steingart, in the Forward. The most phenomenal story about Hawaiian Jewry is that of the accomplishments of Rabbi Julius Nodel, of Honolulu’s Temple Emanuel. He came there in 1971 when the Reform congregation had 40 members. Now it has 350. Rabbi Nodel has just retired. There is also a Conservative congregation in Honolulu; it’s called Sof Maarov (West End). Mixed Seating Mooted In Denver DENVER — A special meeting was held Tuesday at Congregation Hebrew Educational Alliance to discuss the mixed seating question. After hearing from a special committee of a list of possible courses of action, those present were asked to state their preference on a form for the guidance of the board at its meeting in January.

Smear The Government There is a popular game in Israel which, for want of a better name, could well be called “Smear the Government”. Since national elections will be held sooner or later in 1981, those who would like to succeed the present administration find it “good” politics to emphasize every possible negative aspect of Government policy. Admittedly, economic conditions are difficult in Israel, but the critics insist it is all the fault of the Likud Government. The skyrocketing price of oil on the world markets has nothing to do with it; the refusal of labor to give up its demands for ever higher standard of living; the artificial stimulation of a national mood of depression and despair, are not responsible. Only Begin and his colleagues are to blame. THE PRESS IS LARGELY HOSTILE to Begin, and can be counted on to headline and even sensationalize every bit of gloomy news, thus further contributing to the popular mood. Radio and television, though technically Government media, are actually in the control of a small group of hostile professionals who, in the name of “freedom of expression”, find it “good” politics to accentuate the negative. In an attempt to change the popular mood, or at least to show that there is also a positive, happy, constructive side to life in Israel, the Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Armed Forces broadcast services, decided to launch a regular television program to be called “Boker Tov”. It was intended to be an antidote to the consistent campaign of pessimism and despair whose purpose was all too clear. So what happened? The opposition and its P.R. spokesmen rose up in mighty protest. Any program designed to show a good side to life in Israel, they charged, had an obvious purpose: to help improve the image of the present Government. This was “politics” which must be barred from public television. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, they had their way! The authorities were compelled to postpone “Boker Tov” until after the elections, and in the meantime Israelis continue to be showered with every possible negative, hostile, depressing, discouraging, melancholy report which can contribute to the destruction of public morale, and thus lead to public support of the other Party, which seeks to attain power in Jerusalem . — A.C. New Year's Eve By MARTIN MOSKOVITZ My friend, Marvin, has a dual personality. Normally he’s shy and reticent, but at parties he’s a terror. So much so that his wife has remarked to me several times. “He’s so young at parties, yet around the house he’s always so old.” n I must confess however, that I sometimes Y * ■■ envy Marvin. I’m not exactly a live wire at k social gatherings. As a matter of fact, all I \ do is sit around and try to look cosmopolitan. , But getting back to Marvin, it’s those ^ martinis which are his problem. Take this I * - «past New Year’s eve for instance. He had Moskovitz four martinis and he practically ushered in the new year single-handedly. Later on unfortunately, he became what you might call the strife of the party. In addition to other shtick, he dropped the olives from his martinis down the front of a low cut gown worn by the president of Sisterhood. That in itself wasn’t too hilarious, but after that he strutted around the room and loudly announced that he had just been to “the mounds of olives.”
Large Families Are To Be Aided
JERUSALEM — American Jewish parents with three, four or five or more children need not start packing for Israel if the three proposals for rewarding large families now before the knesset are enacted into law. One of the details calls for having served
in the Israel Defense Services, or related security and national service. The provisions are liberal — Financial benefits in education, housing, income tax and purchase of essential durable household requirements are the reward.
