Jewish Genes Abundantly Fertilized
BY RABBI SAMUEL SILVER In his book, “The Jewish Mystique,” the author, Van Der Haag (who won’t say whether he himself is Jewish) has an explanation for the bra ini ness of so many Jews. For centuries, he wrote, the best Christian genes were sterilized; that is, the brightest Christians went into the priesthood. But Jewish genes were abundantly fertilized; many rabbis had gigantic families. Evidence of Jewish prolixity was to be seen in the obituary of Rabbi Gedalia Schorr, brilliant head of the Torat va-Daat yeshivah, who recently died. Schorr, whose departure is widely lamented in the Yiddish press, was the father of eight children: four sons who themselves head yeshivot, and four daughters, married to yeshivah principals. The Orthodox world and the Yiddish press are in mourning over two other painful
demises: that of Rabbi Joseph Lookstein, one of the greatest rabbis of this century; and Arthur Jacobs, who published the Yiddish daily, the Day, and then the DayMorning Journal. Many writers praise Schorr and Lookstein. Jacobs gets special laudation from Gershon Jacabson, the editor of the Algemeiner Journal, who was a reporter for Jacobs before he started his own weekly.
WEVD Converted People who tune into Radio Station WEVD, which is owned by the Yiddish Daily Forward (and named after Eugene Victor Debs) are often astounded to a hear a Christian evangelist. Reason is that the wave length was rented out to a church group. Now the Christians will have the station to themselves, since the Forward sold it to them for a million dollars. But, Forward readers are told, don’t worry: the Yiddish paper has retained the FM outlet, which will continue to
FOUR OUR “CHAIR” this week we devote it to a fervent write-up of the recent first national Havurah conference. The author is Mrs. Ruth Sklut and her letter explains why she is submitting her effervescent piece to us. We think you’ll feel the intenseness of Mrs. Sklut’s involvement in the four-day conference, and she skillfully, although presumably an amateur with words, reflects the overriding sense of devotion that dominated the conference. Yossi Klein — Situation Big Worry
(Continued From Previous Page)were pulled back from the abyss in 1973, with a last chance to change, and we blew it. As for the possibility of change: Few in Israel seriously believe any more in reform. Yadin’s failure has made a mockery of liberal Israeli reformist aspirations. Begin’s domestic failures have made Sfardim that much more cynical. And Begin’s foreign policy has alienated the right wing from the political process, which before Begin’s election trusted in the Likud alternative to implement its policies. SO WHAT we have now is a situation shaping up where the opposing components of Israeli society no longer believe in the political process as a means of solving their grievances. In other words: the makings of violent street confrontation. It is difficult to try to sum up so many observations in this brief space. I hope that at least you get a sense of what I’m saying. I don’t think I’m being unduly pessimistic. I’ve spoken to Israelis — stable people who for years were
telling me things could not be better in Israel — who now admit that for the first time they are worried. And what worries most of them is not the external situation as much as internal decay. The two are linked, of course, in that a weakened Israel will be unable to resist the intense pressure that is coming. I am afraid that American Jews are in for a rude awakening about the true nature of Israeli society. IN ANY CASE, after this long sad tale, let me tell you that I bought an apartment in Jerusalem. I plan to move there within two years, but you know how plans can be. At least I have a base there, and that’s a start. Enclosed is a column. Stay well. YOSSI

use the call letters' WEVD (the church outfit will operate out of call letters WPOP). and indeed, the Yiddish programs by the Forward will be expanded, thanks to the income of the sale.
Kibbutz Yiddish On a trip to Israel, the Forward’s Abraham Shulman stumbled upon a first: credit accorded to a kibbutznik for teaching Yiddish. In a kibbutz each resident must have an assigned duty. Mrs. Lionel Geffen, of Kfar Giladi, started a Yiddish class which grew to the point that she was officially designated teacher of Yiddish. More than that, Tzi Mann, who supervises the school system of a cluster of kibbutzim in North Galilee, announced that accreditation for Yiddish would be branted to any other kibbutzim that would like to institute courses. Naturally, this brought great elation to Shulman, who tells us that Ella Geffen is the daughter of Mrs. Dora Wasserman, impressaria of Yiddish plays in Montreal. As for Mann, his late father, Mendel Mann, was a Yiddish writer whom Shulman knew well. • Canada Renegs When Joe Clark ran for the premier’s slot in Canada, he promised to move the Canadian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Now he has seemingly reneged on the promise or at least is delaying its fulfilment because, he now says, he didn’t realize how complex the situation is. Who is behind the Clark hesitancy? The U.S. government, charges M.I. Nirenberger, of the Algemeiner Journal. Not only that, but the U.S. is behind the anti-Israel

The Lox Box
Russian Jeans By MARTIN MOSKOVITZ
Apparently, there is something the Russians did not invent. It’s American blue jeans. Soviet teenagers have always envied American tourists and their perfectly fitten jeans. In fact, the demand among the citizens for blue jeans became so great that the Russians, fearful of another revolution,
started to manufacture them.
However, Soviet know-how in this area was virtually non-existent. They didn’t know blue jeans from a bowl of borscht. The skinny < gals complained that the jeans were too ‘baggy around their rears and the fat ones
had an opposite lament.
These drastic developments on the Russian front (and rear) finally compelled the Soviet leaders to negotiate with American jeans firms to build a plant in Russia. In view of all this, we can now truthfully say that we finally have the Russians by the seat of their pants.

declarations of the Common Market. Why? Because they’re all buckling under to the shieks. Most of the Orthodox writers say that the new settlement policy of the Begin regime (which has provoked so much anti-Israel talk is
necessary for the defense of Israel. One who demurs is Nathan Yalin-More, of the Algemeiner Journal, who says that the money spent on the little outposts could be better spent on other defense measures.
