We’re a noisy country, not always too clean, and, at times, exasperatingly inefficient and yet, for illogical, hard-to-define reasons, I love Israel - not because of its faults, but in spite of them. To love your country means to fight against its faults, to live with them without reconciling yourself to them - and to put them in correct perspective as against achievements and advantages, material and spiritual alike. pears and the Kinneret shimmers below, I feel a wonderful sense of elation. Objectively speaking I know that Switzerland and Austria have more beautiful lakes, more exciting mountains, more dramatic landscapes. But I’m like a mother who knows that other mothers have wonderful children, too, but that hers are a little special, a little something else. ALTHOUGH most of the time I’m really just a mere housewife who spends her time trying to juggle schedules and needs of the different members of my family into a relatively smooth, conflictless pattern, I still feel important. I’m continuallv moved to find myself a part of what is really one of the greatest experiments of the 20th century, the return of my people to our homeland after 2,000 years of exile. Most of the time I am not aware that I’m part of living history. I’m too busy balancing budgets -- making that second miracle come true -- or coping with torn clothes and bruised knees. But every once in a while it hits me. Walking on the street, going about my daily chores, at different places and at different times, I get a sense, whiff really, a vitally important sense of historical identification that defies analysis. You can call it what you want, but it is this which makes life in Israel incomparably exciting and meaningful - in spite of the frustrations and irritations of daily life. Of course, you never say it, never really admit it - not even to yourself - that you gain deep emotional satisfaction from playing a role, minute as it is, on the stage of history. You keep it to yourself for isn’t it out of date to feel this way? Perhaps, but who cares? If I had to choose again in another life, I would unhesitatingly choose Israel.
