Walter Wolf Requests Retraction Of News Item On Academy Grant
Editor POST and OPINION: I was distressed to read your article appearing on page 15 of the March 17 issue of the Jewish Post and Opinion. The article had no basis in fact and apparently was a complete fabrication. The names of both Mr. Frank Newman and of the undersigned were misused in your article for purposes that are not readily apparent. Mr. Newman made no announcement that the Jewish Welfare Federation had unanimously decided that the Hebrew Academy would receive a substantial yearly allocation, and we can only believe you were aware of the fact. You then went so far as to publish a verbatim quote of a statement I never made, without ever having a representative of the Jewish Post and Opinion contact me. Articles such as this are not onlyirresponsible, but they are divisive of the Jewish Community. Possibly, this is not a concern of The Post. What should be a concern, however, is that this article may be detrimental to pending ac-
tion by the Jewish Welfare Federation concerning the Hebrew Academy. The Jewish Welfare Federation is now in the process of considering and acting upon a request for funding submitted by the Hebrew Academy. I can only hope your article has not adversely affected its actions. Because of the flagrant nature of your article which contained no background information, and which included quoted fabrications, I hereby demand that this letter be published in its entirety in a prominent place in the next issue of the Jewish Post and Opinion. Walter E. Wolf, Jr. President, Jewish Welfare Federation Editor’s note: Evidently Mr. Wolf failed to read the explanation in last week's issue apologizing for our failure to explain that the news item was in the Purim tradition of stating things backwards and that it had been reprinted from the Purim issue of the bulletin of B'nai Torah congregation.
