with the touch of the hand. This park and clubhouse for the city’s Jewish and Arab blind was dedicated recently by Jerusalem’s Mayor Teddv Kollek. It is symbolic, said the Mayor, that the clubhouse was built on a battlefield of the Six Day War. “We have turned a battlefield into a place of peace where people who have suffered from fate can try. at least in a small way, to express feelings of neighborly relations." The clubhouse, built by the Jerusalem Foundation, is located in a six dunam park in a section of Jerusalem called Abu Tor. One section of the site has been turned into an aromatic garden by the

Hebrew University Botanical Department. The perenials in the garden were chosen for their scents; these include rosemary, wormwood and golden Jerusalem sage. Braille signs (in Hebrew', Arabic and English) identify the plants for the blind, who are encouraged to touch them. THE LUSH SOUNDS of cascading water come from a 30meter long spillway, which connects to a pool where the water is recirculated. A similar attempt to provide sensation in sound is a wind harp — a perforated metal object hung with small bells set up above the entrance to the park. The Braille map is located on the observation platform atop the clubhouse. This new facility will provide social, sport and cultural activities including music lessons, gymnastics, chess and lectures. The blind will be brought by bus or taxi in groups but individuals will also be welcome, a municipal official said. The city of Jerusalem will manage the clubhouse facilities. The park is a gift of the city of Vienna and the Jewdsh community of Antwerp The project is an outgrow th of a visit paid by Mayor Kollek to his native Vienna in 1970, his first visit to that city in 35 years. The Jerusalem garden is based on Vienna’s own garden for the blind which Kollek saw on that visit.

The Christian Settlement

The village center dedicated at the unique Christian village of Nes Ammim was a milestone in an experimental settlement which began 14 years ago with a family living out of a bus on a patch of land between Acre and Nahariya. The bus is still to be seen—but now in the company of modern, stucco family homes, gardens, avocado fields, and 25 dunams of hothouse roses. Presiding over it all, at the highest point in the village, is the new center. The village population: 100. The idea of Nes Ammim goes back at least to 1960, a group formed by Christians from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and the United States, in a radical re-thinking of relations between Christians and Jews which was spurred by the Holocaust and by the establishment of the State of Israel, they rejected the idea and practice of Christian mission to the Jew's. To express their solidarity with the people of Israel, and to correct a

long history of distortions and hostility, they decided to set up a collective Christian settlement among kibbutzim and mosbavim. EFFECTIVELY, the project was born in the maternity ward of the Scottish Church Hospital in Tiberias. Johan Pilon was a Dutch doctor serving there when Shlomo Bezek, a kibbutznik from Ayelet Hashahar, came to visit his wife, who was in labor. They got to talking about a topic that concerned them both—and the eventual result was Nes Ammim—“The Banner of the Nations." It was not an easy birth. Dr. Pilon, until his death three years ago, was the driving force behind the establishment of the settlement, and today his widow and three of their five children are the only remaining family of the original settlers. A rapid turnover in population had been expected: volunteers would be coming from abroad to work for a year or two with their co-religionists in Israel, (Continuedon next page)
