The Israel Bond Organization issued a statement today mourning the passing of Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, whom it eulogized as a “warm friend and champion of the State of Israel.” Sam Rothberg, General Chairman, paid tribute to the beloved Minnesota legislator, recalling that ten years ago Vice President Humphrey was the guest of honor at the 1968 International Inaugural Conference of Israel Bonds in Miami where he received the Israel Humanitarian Award, the Bond Organization's highest award. The following is the text of Mr. Rothberg’s tribute to the leader who died last Friday: “Hubert Humphrey was actively identified with the Israel Bond program since its inception. He recognized the indispensable role of Israel Bonds in providing the
resources to develop a sound economy as the foundation for what he termed Israel’s ‘human achievements’ in building a homeland for the Jewish people. “The Israel Bond Organization mourns his passing with profound sorrow. He was a beloved leader and shining symbol of American freedom as w-ell as a warm friend and champion of Israel. His ardent support of Israel reflected his love of humanity and his lifelong dedication to freedom, justice, equality and brotherhood of all mankind.”
