Ros/yn Yalow Family Exceptional

By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER After Dr. Roslyn Yalow won a Nobel prize she didn’t stop going to her kosher butcher and standing in line, waiting her turn. But whereas previously she was just another customer, nowadays the ladies fuss all over her. Silver But the Bronx scientist-housewife hasn’t changed. In an exclusive interview with the Forward’s Simon Baker she told him to mind his own business when he asked her how much she weighs, but her husband, who teaches physics at Cooper Union, said she was on a diet. Dr. Yalow has visited Israel five times and had on her staff two Israeli doctors, Raphael Kozlovsky, of Tel Aviv U., and Simon Click, of Ben-Gurion U. Her husband is the son of a deceased Syracuse rabbi, and one of his cousins is Rabbi Nahum Kreisman, of Petach Tikvah. The Yalows have two children. Their son, Ben, 25, is a computer expert; their daughter, liana, 23, a student at Stanford U., is being married December 3 to Daniel Webb, a San Francisco high school teacher. A week later Dr. Yalow

will be in Stockholm to get her half of the Nobel award: $70,000. What will she do with the money, the reporter asked. Give it to my children, she replied. The children were students at the school of the Kingsbridge Center of Israel, an Orthodox shul which Dr. Aaron Yalow served as vice-president. Both husband and wife are ardent Zionists; Aaron was in his college days a member of Avukah, a Zionist organization. • Sadat Act Praised Like the rest of the world, the Yiddish press is jumping over the astonishing Sadat pilgrimage to Israel. Editorially, the Forward joins the rest of mankind in praising Begin for his astute conduct of the matter. The SadatBegin encounter occurred when the Torah reading called for renarration of the reconciliation of Jacob and Esau. The kiss of the two Biblical brothers is being compared to the kiss Sadat bestowed upon Meir (despite the denials that he actually did buss her). In Yiddish the word “kommism”, means that which is comic. In an editorial, the Forward says that the opposition of deepdyed Reds (both in Israel and in Moscow) pointed up the similarity

between kommism and Communism. PLO Outwitted In a background piece on the Sadat visit to Israel, the Forward’s crack UN correspondent, Shiomo Ben Israel, stresses the point that the Arab leaders themselves are sick and tired of the PLO. They do indeed back them publicly, because they do their dirty work in discomforting Israel and because some are afraid they will be physically assailed (which points up Sadat’s valor). But, actually, the Arab leaders have more to fear from the PLO than does Israel, and one of the breakthroughs of the Sadat coup may be the public repudiation of the PLO (to match the private views of the Arab chieftains). Editor’s note: Rabbi Silver’s new pulpit is the Jewish Community Center of Lee Country, Cape Coral, Fla., and he would appreciate it if his colleagues would redirect their congregational bulletins to him at his new address, 5232 Coronado Pkwy, Cape Coral, Fla., 33904.) Moonies File Suit On Right To Solicit PHILADELPHIA (P-O)-The Unification Church of Rev. Sun Myung Moon filed suit against the nearby city of Chester, Pa., and its three top officials in the U. S. District Court here, charging church members have been unlawfully prevented from exercising their religious beliefs by not being permitted to canvas and solicit donations. The suit, announced by Rony Troyer. public relations director for the Moonies, challenged the constitutionality of two Chester city ordinances. Troyer pointed to successful court battles in Parkersburg and Huntington in W. Va. and said the Moonies are planning suits in different parts of the country to force recognition of its solicitation rights.

The Lox Box Fear For Sadat By MARTIN MOSKOV ITZ My friend, Gerson, is an incurable pessimist. When the startling news broke last month that Sadat was going to visit Israel, I immediately called Gerson, my Middle East expert. The first thing he said at that time was simply, “I’m worried.” “What’s to worry?” I asked. “It’s a step toward peace.” “It’ll be trouble,” Gerson countered. “I don’t understand,” I said. Gerson explained. “Sadat’s coming to Israel to improve relations between the two countries, right?” “Right.” “So that’s where the problem lies.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “I mean, relations could get plenty worse,” Gerson said somberly. “How come?” “How come he asks. For one thing, they’ll probably drive Sadat around from place to place in a limousine,” Gerson said. “So what’s so bad?” I asked. “It’s not the limousine I’m concerned about,” Gerson explained with a quiver in his voice. “I’m worried they might accidently hire an Israeli cab driver for the job.”
