Data concerning age distribution in many Jewish communities show that the proportion of children as compared with that of old people is very small — and out of all comparison with that of the general population. Prof. Bacchi ascribes this drop in fertility to the persistent trauma of the Holocaust as well as to the large incidence of mixed marriages and the high rate of Jewish migration. Since the larger percentage of old people brings on an increasing rate of mortality among the Jews which by far exceeds natality, the Jewish populations throughout the world tends to drop even though in some instances a balance is maintained through Jewish immigration. In all probability, Prof. Bacchi believes, the numbei of Jews in the Diaspora is considerably smaller than is generally estimated. AS AGAINST this generally dark picture, the situation in Israel is inestimably better. There are almost no mixed marriages here, fertility is high, while the age composition of the population is much more balanced. The rate of mortality in Israel is lower than the natality so that there is a considerable natural increase in the country. Israel is the only country in the world where there is no surplus of deaths over births. While in the short run Prof. Bacchi believes that the Jewish population of Israel is likely to be considerably influenced by aliyah, in the long run the demographic development of the Jewish population of the country will lie determined by the fertility of the Israeli society.

Prairie Village Deserted, But Shul, Cemetery Intact

EDENBRIDGE, Saskatchewan — The little-travelled gravel road drops down into the valley of the Carrot River, then rises again into the rapeseedyellow fields and patches of forest. On the edges of the fields and forests are the occasional crumbling remains of log buildings, relics of a flourishing Jewish settlement. FOUNDED IN 1906 by eight men and two women who came from South Africa to make their fortune but instead made a community, Edenbridge grew to a peak of about 60 families before it vanished from the map. The credit union that was the first in Saskatchewan is long gone, as are the post office, the stores, the schools, the small library and the meeting halls where amateur theatrical groups performed. Only one Jewish family still farms nearby But. in a sense, the community still lives. The plain wooden synagogue, completed in 1908, stands on the hilltop north of the river, with a fresh coat of white paint. HIDDEN in a clearing 500

yards down a lane is the cemetery. The 45 headstones take up only a small part of the meadow, but it is all mowed and well maintained. The renovated synagogue and well-kept cemetery are, in fact, visible evidence of the desire of tlie children of Edenbridge to remember their heritage. A recent banquet commemorating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the settlement drew hundreds of people from across the continent. THE CHILDREN of Edenbridge, 50 miles east of Prince Albert in northern Saskatchewan, had gone on to success in business and the professions. Senator Sid Buckwold of Saskatoon is one of them. Norm Vickar, who left the settlement in 1955 to move 25 miles west to Melfort and now is mayor and member of the legislature there, said in an interview that restoration of the synagogue means much more than simply maintaining an old building, which now 1 is a historic site. “We are keeping the history that was made by our fathers (Continued on Next Page)
