for Community Centers in Haifa where women from developing countries come to learn, among other things, how to be more effective nursery and kindergarten teachers, how to eradicate illiteracy among the adult members of their population, how to improve and change the nutritional habits of their fellow-countrymen and how to establish home industries and market the crafts
made.
I have met many of these participants, shared with them their enthusiasm for the knowledge they have acquired, but my most memorable personal encounter was with a young eye doctor. Dr. Moses Chirambo from Malawi who told me about Israel's eye program in three African countries — Malawi, Lesotho and Sw'aizland. Initially Israel set up and staffed eye clinics in these countries. However, in order to make these countries independent, ophthalmologically speaking, Israel is also training eye doctors and nurses in Israel. When I met him, Dr Chirambo was just completing his three-year course at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and was on his way back to his home country to become the first native-born opthalmologist there. He had only praise for the training he had received in Israel, “mainly,” as he said, “because three-fourths of the staff have already worked in Malawi” (on the rotating scheme which requires Israeli doctors wishing to specialize in opthalmology to spend at least two years in a developing country or in an outlying hospital in Israel). “THESE DOCTORS,” adds Dr. Chirambo, “have experience with regard to the specific tropical eye diseases which I will be encountering: they have been to Malawi, and they know under what circumstances I will have to
work.”
Israel is a small country and there are those who wonder where we find the energy and manpower for projects of assistance abroad. The answer may lie in an old parable which tells that the River of Jordan feeds two seas, the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. In the former the water is sweet: in the latter it is salty. Why? The explanation: the water of the Sea of Galilee is sweet because it both gives and receives water while that of the Dead Sea is salty because it only receives and does not give.
