Yom Kippur. the Sabbath of Sabbaths, is the most solemn and holy day in the entire Jewish year. It is the climax of the ten-day period of repentance which began with Rosh Hashonah. The idea of repentance is one of Judaism’s greatest contributions. The optimistic spirit of Judaism does not tolerate the idea that a man need ever despair and lose faith in himself because of past error. No one can sink so low that he cannot find his way back to God by self-discipline. This very concept of repentance and atonement has made the Jewish outlook on life one of cheerful confidence. Atonement prayers articulating the ideals of human brotherhood and mutual forgiveness make the worshipper intensely aware of human frailty, reminding him that no man is absolutely free from sin and error. Confessions are recited in the first person plural to emphasize the collective responsibility of the whole community for offenses that can be prevented. Prayer and confession alone, however, do not guarantee that a person will be forgiven for his ques- | tionable behavior during the past year. Jewish tradition specifically dictates that ultimate forgiveness for one’s shortcomings will only come to pass when man begs sincere repentance from God, and then follows up this verbal repentance with daily, on-going acts of humanity and love toward his fellow man. OBSERVANCES As is the case with all Jewish Holydays and festivals. Yom Kippur begins at sundown. Prior to the beginning of the fast, the entire family eats an elaborate and festive meal to indicate that the fast is approached not in a spirit of doom, but with an eager anticipation of God’s grace. A Home Service at the conclusion of the Yom Kippur eve meal helps to set the mood of the Holyday and prepares worshippers for the Synagogue Service. On Yom Kippur eve a memorial light may be kindled in the home to recall departed loved ones; the light may burn for twenty-four hours. As with Rosh Hashonah, the Jew should not engage in any kind of labor on Yom Kippur. One should absent himself from his office, business, and school; one’s own place of business should be closed on this day. The Torahs in the Ark are dressed in white mantles, and the Rabbis and cantor wear white robes during the High Holyday season. White is the symbol of purity, as we read in Isaiah 1:18 — “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” FASTING - There are several compelling reasons for all Jews to fast on Yom Kippur: (Continued on Next Page)
