Arabs On Campus Make Little Headway: Hillel

WASHINGTON — “Dire conclusions already given credence by some spokesmen in the Jewish community that Arab propaganda efforts on American campuses have heightened anti-Israel and antiJewish hostility among students and faculty are largely unwarranted fears.” it was said here by Dr. Norman Frimer. Dr. Frimer is national director of the Hillel Foundations. HE CITED a survey by Hillel at 120 American schools that showed no “significant shift in campus opinion which, by and large, supports Israel's right to survival.”

What has been achieved, he said is “a sense of discomfort among Jewish students and others on campus” as a result of effort by pro-Arab groups distributing literature, screening films, organizing exhibits and convening rallies with speakers hostile to Israel.” THE LONE EVIDENCE of any success of these efforts, according to Rabbi Frimer, was that “such issues as Palestinian national self-determination, the existence of an Arab diaspora and the question of refugee repatriation . . . are now highlighted in Middle East debates on campus.”

Isaiah Fund Moves Slowly With 10 New Contributions

ISAIAH FUND CONTRIBUTIONS Amount needed $6 ,r> 0 Previously contributed $253 Mr. & Mrs. Paul Steinmetz, Indianatx)lis 10 Michael Leventhal, Indianapolis 10 Hannah Cohen, Tucson 5 Inga Kaminski, Chicago 5 Gertrude Mishkin, Elkhart, Ind 5 Joseph Spiegel, Martinez, Calif. 5 Maxwell Street, Chicago . 5 Phillip Mandel, New York 5 Mr. & Mrs. Seymour Guttman, Hallandale, Fla. 5 Mr. & Mrs. Pinkus Sugarman, St. Petersburg, Fla. 5 Total Thus Far $313 Amount Still Required $337

The campaign to raise $650 to add the name of Isaiah on the inscription of his famous quotation on the Wall of the United Nations Plaza in New York moved ahead slowly as ten contributions totalling $60 were received. The drive is just $12 short of the halfway mark. A FEW BIG gifts should complete the effort, and hopefully will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. The inscription appears on the wall which is part of the UN Plaza area, and was brought to the attention of The Post and Opinion by Sam Brown, a former official of the American Jewish Congress. Through long correspondence starting with Mayor Beame, he finally reached Joseph Bresnan, director of monuments for the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Administration of New York City, which is responsible for the Plaza. “WE COULD proceed to the

work almost immediately as it would not require a formal city contract,” he wrote, but specified that no funds were available for the work and would have to be provided by Mr. Brown. The quotation from the Prophet reads: “THEY SHALL beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword

against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” But the name “Isaiah” is missing, and when this omission was brought to the attention of the authorities, they agreed to correct it providing the necessary funds were forthcoming. Contributions should be sent to the Isaiah Fund, Jewish Post and Opinion, 611 N. Park Ave., Indianapolis, Ind. 46204, They will be acknowledged in the P O

Agencies Give No Aid

(Continued from Preceding Page) Another ex-employe, also on tape, recalled that a younger employe asked at a sales meeting: “What should I do? I have this Jewish customer, and he wants to come to the island. What do I tell him?” One of the older salesmen, according to the ex-employe, retorted: “You just tell him there is no synagogue on the island, and none is planned.” Of the seven or eight houses of worship at Hilton Head, Fraser acknowledged, none are synagogues. DR. MOREY Lipton, a leader of the Jewish community in nearby Charleston, S.C., had nothing to say about discrimination at Sea Pines but a good deal of comment on the Kuwaitis. “We’re fearful of secondary boycotting as already practiced by the Arabs in the United States,” he said. “We want Kuwait to end the boycott . . . Otherwise, we don’t want them doing business in South Carolina . . . It’s not a Jewish issue, but an American issue.” Responded the Kuwaitis in Washington: “There is never going to be any discrimination (at the Kiawah Island report) against the Jews as Jews.” The world boycotting, said an embassy spokesman, “has nothing to do with Jews . It is only against Israel.”

RABBI SHERMAN had another obstacle to overcome in addition to official recalcitrance to turn away a development project. The News And Courier, the daily paper, in an editorial headed, “Taking on Kiawah Arabs,” had this to say in part: “An extension of Arab-Israeb wars into Charleston County — with Kiawah Island as the battlefield — fills us with misgivings. We would like the place to settle Middle Eastern issues to be the Middle East, not our backyard. . . “It will help if they will remember that this is Charleston County not the Middle East. 1 he Kiawah development is for Americans, not Arabs. The company doing the development is American, not Arab. The benefits supposed to be forthcoming are for Americans as well as for Arabs. And above all. American rules govern, not Arab. As they dig in. therefore, the marksmen had better be cautioned to take aim carefully. 1 here are risks when you have to shoot around one target to get to another. We hope the innocent bystanders we visualize in the line of fire don t get too many bullets meant for somebody else.”
