Russian Jews Fight We Parade

9y YOSSI KLEIN There were few surprises in New York on April 13 when f— —? 100,000 Jews marched in what one local network called “the fourth annual parade” for Soviet Jewry. Without question. Solidarity Day, Klebi already an established institution, is a significarr event — certainly for American Jews. Its effect on the spiritual integrity and vitality of the Soviet Jewry movement is, however, a debatable point. Of course, it is always good to be among so many Jews. And Solidarity Day did bolster the morale of Soviet Zionists, even if they unfortunately had to wait a full year to get the message. And perhaps most important of all, it. provided a platform for Senator Jackson and his Amendment, as well as an opportunity for grassroots Jews to publicly acknowledge and cheer his incredible efforts on behalf of the Jewish

people.

BUT HOW much political muscle and seriousness of intent can an ' annual parade” reveal? Two very disturbing words, those and they have come to symbolize the deterioration of the entire movement. Indeed, this year’s march slogan, “Their fight is our fight,” might

be better re-phrased, “Their fight is our parade.” Little fighting spirit was evident on April 13. One newspaper account could pretty much sum up the substance of all previous Solidarity Days: the same faces and numbers, the identical march route and rhetoric. The demonstrators are always referred to as “good-natured,” and a picnic-like atmosphere pervades the gathering. But where is the urgency, and if not the violence, at least the anger? LATELY, the Soviet has given us much to be angry about. The unprecedented police invasion of the Moscow Synagogue during Passover; the sentencing of two Moscow activists, Tsitlonak and Nashpitz, to five years exile and the legal proceedings being brought against Jews throughout the USSR; the deliberate curb on emigration and the corresponding rises of harassment of would-be emigrants — all were mentioned in the speeches but somehow failed to affect the crowd. And that is probably because Solidarity Day is considered by many of its participants not so much a protest against the Soviets but as a yearly Jewish happening, similar to the festive and innocuous Salute to Israel

Parade.

New York Jewery’s commitment to the concept of Solidarity Day has yet to be tested. So far, the weather has been on our side, which made it enjoyable to stroll down Fifth Avenue and meet old friends. How many, though, would bother to show if it rained?

IT IS A valid if painful question. Solidarity Day has been heralded as a manifestation of American Jewish concern for their persecuted brothers. But its very routinization, and its embarrassing implication of wholesale abandonment of the cause on the 364 days not labeled “Solidarity Day,” can lead one to draw very opposite conclusions. I mentioned that there were few surprises at the rally, but there were some. Rav Moshe Feinstein, long an opponent of Soviet Jewry demonstrations, for the first time sent greetings to the assembled. While it is doubtful that this signifies a change in the obstructionist policy of Agudat Yisrael and other elements in the untraOrthodox camp in relation to the Soviet Jewry struggle, it is certainly clear that they now have one less leg to stand on (though pilpul can accomplish wonders). JDL, TOO, sent greetings of sorts — to Ford and Kissinger; 134 of its members were arrested after the rally in a sitdown against American pressure on Israel, and the renewed strength of the organization no doubt surprised those who had considered Jewish militancy moribund. So another year has passed. The Conference surely begun planning next spring’s Solidarity Day, and hopefully, it will be even bigger than in previous years. Let’s just pray for sunny

Many believe that the feud against them was first mounted by Pinhas Sapir because the Bloomfields preferred to distribute the funds to various Israel educational and medical institutions which maintain legal offices in Canada (as required by Canadian law) rather than to give Mr. Sapir domination over the entire fund.
