THE JEWISH POST

EVEN FOR YOUNGSTERS 12-15 YEARS OF AGE

EveryThing From Sex To Broken Homes Discussed in Courses At Reform Temple

CANOGA PARK, Calif (P-O) — A Reform congregation here that has delved into questions such as sex, marriage, and the broken home in depth and with great honesty and has even put a psychologist on its staff, reports great receptivity to its program. Senior rabbi at Temple Solael is Bernard M. Cohen. Known as the Extended Family program, even teenagers are not neglected, but only with the consent of the parents. One program for 12-15 year olds discussed human sexuality and went into subjects such as anatomy and physical development, menstruation, masturbation, boygirl relationships, sexual intercourse, contraceptive devices, venereal diseases, pregnancy and abortion. The two-hour course was conducted by Clara and A1 Goldstein, professional social workers, and followed a similar course for 15-18 year olds which was well received. ANOTHER COURSE, headed “Marriage

Maintenance,” took up the subjects of open marriage, how far can I go without going too far, is there a marriage menopause, what about that 17-year itch, is funky sex really necessary, are the joys of sex joyous, just what is family therapy anyway, how do we agree to disagree, is there such a thing as fighting fair. Charney Herst, who is associated with the Jewish Family Service in nearby Van Nuys conducted this course for which there was a $5.00 charge. She was aided by other professionals. To show how deep the congregation entered into today’s world, one course was aimed at children of broken homes. Limited to children from ages of seven to 17, and after initial interviews with the rabbi and the youngster, the course sought to answer such questions as “What do I say to friends who learn that my parents no longer live together? How shall I respond to my parent who speaks about the

other parent with hostility? How often do I have to see my absent parent?” A ONE-TIME SEMINAR took up the subject of Sexual Dysfunction, and was limited to five couples on a first come, first serve basis. The Goldsteins, who conducted the seminar, are trained in the field and hold certificates of study from the Center for Marital and Sexual Studies of Long Beach. In order to plan intelligently on the questions which bother teenagers, a questionnaire distributed to young people asked for responses to subjects such as how to overcome fear, how to deal with conflicts inside yourself, how to say no, how to deal with bullies, how to express anger, overprotecting parents, overcoming nervous habits, deal with sexual problems, brothers and sisters and how to get more out of life.

BIG QUESTION

WILL KISSINGER BE ABLE ASCRIBING UN QUOTE

TO BRIDGE DIFFERENCES?

TO ISAIAH POSSIBLE

WASHINGTON (P-O) - Whether Henry Kissinger can reconcile the differences between Israel and Egypt was the big question this week as he already was occupied with other duties following his next to the last trip to the Middle East. That he feels he can was clear in view of the authorized pronouncements from his entourage and his own statements. EVEN THE guarded, optimistic announcements from Rabin and Sadat have served to raise hopes, but the real crunch will come when Kissinger returns to the scene of his previous successes and tries to put together a package that in the form of a compromise finds each side agreeable. Israel is ready to yield vital parts of the Sinai for a definite non-belligerent statement from Egypt. How long that nonbelligerency agreement will stipulate and whether Egypt

will put her name to it on the dotted line seem to be open to question, but that is very likely where the matter stands at the moment. WHATEVER THE results of the U.S. Secretary of State’s final attempt to bring the two sides together, the sessions on Geneva are the next step. If

an agreement can be reached now, observers recognize that this will simplify and even could make the difference between success and failure at Geneva. It is for this reason that neither Israel nor Egypt is willing to take a stand that will almost inevitably make Mr. Kissinger’s trip impossible of success.

Nazi Wins Verdict Against Officer

CHICAGO — An American Nazi party member who had been marching in front of the Pick-Congress Hotel shouting anti-Semitic threats and obscenities as Jews arrived for a Warsaw Ghetto memorial meeting in 1973 won a police brutality case in U.S. District Court here. A six-member jury found that Chicago Police Lt. Frank Manley violated the civil

Goldmann At 79 Gets 5 More Years JERUSALEM - Delegates to the World Jewish Congress have returned to their homes after re-electing Dr. Nahum Goldmann in a noisy session for another five-year term, and winning the condemnation of most of the Israeli press. Dr. Goldmann took the occasion of the last sessions to reprove the press for its

“hostile” attitude.

A vigorous 79-year-old Dr. Goldmann dominated the weeklong sessions, and told the delegates after the election that he would choose the man to succeed him. He said he didn’t believe he would serve the full

five-year term.

Named to head the governing council was Philip Klutznick of Chicago, whom many, including the Jerusalem Post, felt would be the man Dr. Goldmann would select to succeed him

STAMP ON THE HOLOCAUST WASHINGTON, D.C. - A bill authorizing the U.S. Postal Service to issue a postage stamp memorializing the Holocaust has been proposed by Rep. Charles Carney of Ohio. The stamp would mark the 25th anniversary of the end of the

rights of Cedric N. Syrdahl when he broke his nose with a nightstick. Testimony revealed that Manley spotted Syrdahl, who weighs 240 pounds and is six feet three inches tall, with his fist upraised over an elderly man.

NO BRUTALITY CHARGE JERUSALEM - That he did not charge the police with brutality against youngsters under arrest was stated by Dr. M. Horowitz, director of correctional services of the Ministry of Social Welfare. In a letter to The Jerusalem Post, which reported the accusation, he wrote that the charges were made at question time by some members of the audience.

NEW YORK (P-O) - A oneman campaign to have the inscription at the United Nations ascribed to Isaiah lacks only $750 to be successful. Sam Brown, a former official of the American Jewish Congress, launched the drive to have the inscription in the wall at the UN properly identified. BROWN BEGAN his effort last May with a letter to Mayor Beame, and one to Kurt Waldheim of the United Nations. Both directed him to the City Planning Commission which erected the wall as part of its program to improve the UN Plaza area. He was next referred to the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Administration, where he finally got action, but only if he supplied the necessary funds. Joseph Bresnan, director of monuments, after additional

correspondence between the pair, notified Brown that “we could proceed to the work almost immediately as it would not require a formal city contract,” provided $650 was forthcoming. BROWN ASKED The Post and Opinion if it could persuade its readers to supply the $650. Any contributions will be placed in a trust until the $650 is reached and then made available to Mr. Brown. Checks should be made out to the Isaiah Fund, and mailed to The Post and Opinion, 611 N. Park Ave., Indianapolis, Ind. 46204. The famous Isaiah quotation reads: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.’’

Betar Motorcade Protests PLO

MILWAUKEE - A Zionist Organization which to all intents and purposes no longer exists in the United States and which therefore most American Jews are unfamiliar with has sprung into activity here as the Betar, the youth movement of the militant Revisionist Zionists, sponsored a motorcade through

this city in protest against the PLO. About 110 persons participated in the motorcade which moved into a rally at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dan Ruderman, leader of the motorcade, said “We want to show people that there is opposition to Arab terrorism.”
