77 RABBIS ON BREIRA COMMITTEE
NEW YORK (P-O) - At least 77 rabbis are members of the advisory committee of Breira, the new organization formed recently to assert the equality of the diaspora with Israel and to call attention to the imbalance at present. Among the rabbis are not only Rabbi Joachim Prinz, one of the leaders of the World Jewish Congress, but spiritual leaders of stature such as Robert Gordis, Ira Eisenstein, Balfour Brickner, Eugene Borowitz and Jacob Neusner. OVER A hundred members
form the committee, which includes many lay leaders such as Dr. Trade Weiss-Rosmarin, and Arthur Waskow. Hardly any of the leadership of national Jewish organizations are represented. The summer issue of The Breira Newsletter which published the committee names carried an article by Gerson Hundert asking such questions as: “Does Jewish destiny in fact now reside in the State of Israel? What happens when the interests of the Jewish people and those of the State of Israel do not coincide? What
proportion of the energies and resources of the state of Israel should be devoted to the needs of the diaspora and vice versa?” AMONG the rabbis on the advisory committee are Arnold Asher, Albert S. Axelrad, Leonard I. Beerman, A.M. Belzer, Philip Bentley, Alan Berg, Alvin K. Berkun, Donald R. Berlin, Murray Blackman, Bernard H. Bloom, Herman J. Los Angeles Growth Stops
LOS ANGELES - Has the Jewish population of this area stabilized and no longer showing “dynamic growth?” Preliminary data of the Jewish housenoius in some San Gabriel Valley Jewish communities, as presented by the National Jewish Population Survey, show that the bloom is off the rose as far as some predictions that Los Angeles, now the second largest Jewish community in the United States, was destined to assume first place. Dr. Fred Massarik’s compilation as shown on the accompanying tables show a small growth in the number of households in 14 communities compared from 1962 to 1973, but the decline in the number of Jews in each household from 3 85 per cent to 3.40 per cent put the Jewish population almost at a standstill. Dr. Massarik told The Post and Opinion that the projections o f Los Angeles Jewish population growth are not

supported by fact. “Our data suggested,” he said, “these downturns some years ago, but the psychology of the situation was such that when we estimated a Jewish population of say 500,000 for the Greater Los Angeles area,
people immediately added tens of thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands on the basis of naive projection of past trends.”

To Hospital After Study
CLEVELAND — Mt. Sinai Hospital here will continue to be supported by the Jewish Community Federation and this year’s allocation was set at $650,000 as the result of a report made by a committee named last year to study the question. In accepting the report, the board of trustees reaffirmed a

position stated in 1969 that “As the Federation’s largest agency in the health and welfare field, the hospital makes an outstanding contribution to the Jewish and general community’s welfare.” The report was more specific in item two of its decision, according to the Cleveland Jewish News, which stated that “The Federation has historically supported Mt. Sinai Hospital for intrinsic Jewish reasons. It represents a major philanthropic interest for many members of the Jewish community; is an area of involvement for Jewish volunteers, provides a Jewish environment for those patients who desire it, and constitutes a center of high-quality care for the Jewish community and a training center for Jewish physicians.

BALTIMORE - What happens when law enforcement breaks down in a community? The police department here went on a strike recently. Suffering as much if not more than anybody were Jewish merchants, according to a survey in The Baltimore Jewish Times. Alfred Kob.man was notified
Mafia Figure Slain In Shul NEW YORK — An assassination of a Mafia figure at a Brooklyn synagogue where a Las Vegas Night was in progress has centered attention on the gambling that takes place in many synagogues and churches. Steve Cirillo, 31, was killed by a shot in the head fired apparently from outside Congregation B’nai Israel of Sheepshead Bay. The Men’s Club of the Orth o d o x Congregation had launched weekend gambling programs including dice, roulette and cards several months ago to raise funds for a new building. Officials of the congregation insisted that the congregation conducted the operation on its own.

by his alarm company that his pharmacy was being looted. He rushed to the store to find a large number of black people looting, many of them his customers, and wielding mallets and baseball bats to destroy the fixtures and making the interior a shambles. NATHAN LEMLER, whose store has been at the same location for over 40 years, doesn’t believe that black racism was the cause of his loss of his entire stock of liquor and cigarettes. Many of the black people in the neighborhood have come in to console him. He has put the store up for sale. Likewise Harry Basik. His store also is up for sale. Everything that could be moved was either stolen or destroyed. It took an hour before police finally responded to the call for help. HE HELD the opinion that t h e rioting was racially oriented. While the looting and destruction was going on, many of the blacks were shouting, “We’re going to get you whites out of the neighborhood,” he said. Most of the same storekeepers suffered in the 1968 riots, but reopened their places of businesses after the disturbances had died down. It was the ruthless destruction that made the worst impression on the Jewish store owners. In the case of Reyman Drug Co.. Inc., Mayer Oxman, the owner, told The Times that few items were stolen, but the looters used a large axe and destroyed almost everything in the store. He estimated his loss at $15,000. THE CITY has not declared the disturbances as riots, which prevents the store owners from being able to collect on their insurance policies. The Times reported that black businesses also suffered damage.
