Belly Dancing Classes l!l iz l a L chi l^°t e r r lc T
Are Popular At Center
Membership Tea Aug. 21
By TERYL DASKAL Can you touch your toes to the floor — over your head? Can you flutter your stomach in and out, or do arm ripples like back-pedaling in water? If you want to be a belly dancer you’ll learn to do this and much more. About 35 women are learning to belly dance now in weeklyclasses held at the Jewish Community Center. The women range in age from grandmothers to students and their large turnout was so unexpected an extra class had to be formed. “Belly dancing has become much more popular lately,” says instructor Joyce Carringer. “People enjoy it as an easy, fun way to exercise. They exercise muscles they never even thought of using before!” MS. CARRINGER is a certified yoga instructor who became interested in belly dancing because the body control and postures are similar. She has since studied with professional dancers and taught at the JCC last winter. Exercises and body control are essential to belly dancing. Most of the class period consists of exercises designed to limber and loosen you up. You may not lose weight, but you’ll firm up those bulges. Class is informal, in leotards o r shorts, and everyone rehearses the dance motions together. You learn to roll your stomach and shimmy your hips, and even learn a belly dancer’s walk. Then it’s all put to music in a natural and sensual dance. There’s a book you can use, The Complete Belly Dancer, to help you practice at home. Ms. Carringer says about 8 one-hour sessions are necessary to learn the basics.
At a recent meeting of Mizrachi Women held at the home of Mrs. Nandor Fruchter, arrangements were made for a Membership Tea. A dessert luncheon has been planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 21,
at the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hasten. 1115 West
75th St.
Anyone interested to attend the Membership Tea, please contact Mrs. Fruchter, membership chairman, at 255-6710.
THE TEACHER
THE STUDENTS seem to enjoy themselves. “It’s a fun way to reduce,” said one lady. “T thought I was in shape.’’ said another, “but I’ve pulled muscles 1 didn't even know existed!” “My husband asks me every week to show him what I’ve learned,” said one housewife. “But I’ve never performed for anyone but him.” No one is sure where belly dancing originated, but evidence points to the ancient Phoenicians or Egyptians. One story goes that North African tribal women did a sort of belly dance in their old folk dances. Supposedly they would dance in the market place hoping passers-by would throw them gold pieces. Then they would take the coins home and sew them in a belt worn whenever they dance. Such a belt is worn today.
EVENTUALLY the belt would hold enough money for their dowry. Ironically, once married the women could dance only for their husbands. Belly dancing will be offered again this fall at the center along with other classes. It’s a good way to exercise, even if you never dance for your husband.
