THE JEWISH POST AND OPINION
The Digest Of The Yiddish Press Why Only The Orthodox?
By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER The weekly Algemeiner Jour-
by a rabbijournalist, Dr. G e r s h o n J a c o b s on, whose tendencies are Hass i d i c. The newspaper has become the spoke sman of Orthodoxy, with stories about the
Lubavitcher rebbe abounding in
many issues.
This evoked a critical letter to the editor, featured by the Journal, from Morris Kaufman, of Scranton, Pa. Asks the reader: why don’t you print more news about other Jewish groupings: the Reformers, the Conservatives, the Reconstruc-
tionists, and the seculars? * * • Gen. Bradley's Wife You wouldn’t guess that Gen. Omar Bradley would b e featured in an article in the Jewish Daily Forward. But he is, in a piece by the paper’s crack labor editor, I. Fogel. What’s the story? The story is that the General just donated $5,000 to the old age home run by the Workmen’s Circle in the Bronx. Why? Because the general is married to a Jewish lady, whose parents found rest and satisfaction in that establishment. Fogel draws a fascinating picture of Gen. Bradley and his Jewish wife enjoying a trip to the home and the food it offers. If there had been a photo, the caption would have been: “The General and the Gefilte Fish.”

TORAH THOUGHT By Z. A. Hilsenrad In this week’s Torah portion we are told that when the Jewish people will have come into the Promised Land, “. . .thou shalt in any wise set him a king over thee. . .” (Deut. 17:15). Yet we find that the prophet Samuel was extremely displeased when the people came and said to him, “Behold thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways, now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” (I Samuel 8:5). When he prayed for guidance, G-d replied, “Harken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected Me, that I shall not be king over them.” (Ibid v. 7)
Your Name By NORBERT PEARLROTH Dear Mr. Pearlroth: I would appreciate knowing the origin of the name OSTROY. My father was a blacksmith and came from Odessa, Russia. Thank you. Sincerely, Mrs. Mort Edberg, Tucson, Arizona. Os troy — correctly Ostryi or Gostryi — is Ukrainian for a knife grinder or sharpener. The name is not literal but refers to an ancestor of great inteUect and brain power. The name was assumed in 1804. Dear Mr. Pearlroth: My last name is GOLINKIN. My father was born in the district of Cherson in Southern Ukraine. Thank you. Rabbi Noah Golinkin, Knoxville, Tenn. Golinkin is from the Ukrainian “golinka” meaning the tibia or lower part of the leg. It refers to a man with a powerful stride, a walker. The terminal “. . .in” denotes descent, so that the name means “son or descendant of the walker.” (Do you want to know what your name means? REGARDING SAMUEL’S displeasure, Rashi (v. 6) explains that it stemmed from the fact that they asked for a king to “. . . judge us like all the nations.” As G-d’s unique people we should have been completely content to have the King of Kings as our sovereign. The R’dak — R. David Kimchi — comments that G-d’s displeasure over this request stemmed from the fact that it not was inspired by any desire to fulfil the Torah Command to have a king, for in that event | they should have stipulated that they wanted a king who would judge them with justice and faith in G-d. But when the | people asked for a king to
FOR HAD the Jewish people manifested their faith in G-d and acknowledged Him as their King, He would have fought their battles and there would have been no need for a human king to lead them in any wars. That is why G-d told Samuel that it was not him they had rejected but Him. The R’dak concludes that the people used as a pretext to ask for a king the fact that Samuel had grown too old to continue his role as their judge. Had this been a sincere request they should have asked Samuel to appoint a judge in his place, since his sons were not qualified to succeed him. This false, shallow desire “to
be like the other nations” is the cause of the tragic, bitter “Kultur-Kamf” in Eretz Yisroel today. It is also the root of those twin plagues — ' intermarriage and conversions from our pure monotheistic faith. Only a complete religious education, in a Yeshiva staffed by truly G-d fearing Rabbis will fortify our children to fulfill the covenant at Sinai which bound all souls there that fateful day. . . as well as all souls to b e bom until Moshiach comes. . . to study Torah and live by it.
