Threats To Future Of Judaism

Parents, Not Jesus Freaks

By JOAN KAYE WISHKOFF CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. (P-O) — The apathy and conservatism of adult Jews is more of a threat to the future of Judaism than is the wave of popularity of Christian movements and eastern cults among our youth, according to Rabbi Arthur Steinberg of Temple Beth El here.

Shazar To Rebbe, Not Vice Versa NEW YORK — President Zalman Shazar of Israel who was criticized for visiting Rabbi M.M. Schneerson, the Lubavitch Rebbe, on his last visit to New York instead of having the Rebbe come to his hotel, repeated Shazar his visit while in the U.S. to participate in the memorial for President Truman. One of the Rebbe’s disciples, Shazar was greeted by the Lubavitch throng with songs and dancing as he alighted at 770 Eastern Parkway, the world headquarters of the movement. Whether the two talked about Rabbi Goren’s recent solution for the Langer mamzer case can only be speculation, but the Rebbe has called for Rabbi Goren to resign as Chief Rabbi, while Shazar has lauded him for his ability to find a basis for permitting the Langer brother and sister to wed.

Managua Jews Lose Property NEW YORK — First decisions of the 30 Jewish families comprising 150 souls who lived in Managua seem to indicate that they have no reason to return to the earthquakestricken city and very likely will settle elsewhere in Central America. The Jews were almost without exception victims of Hitlerism and had come to Nicaragua in the late 1920s. Their expertise in business and manufacturing led to establishment of textile mills and other enterprises, most of which have now been wiped out. There were no known Jewish casualties from the earthquake. The small synagogue-center was demolished.

QUOTING FROM a recent poll of college seniors of all faiths, the Reform rabbi noted that the “concept of God” was not disappearing among American youth and that indeed the most popular definitions seemed to be even more conventional than those accepted by many adults. Steinberg concluded that God is not dead among Jewish youth and added that “the Jesus Freaks and various mystical cults are not the threat to the future of the Jewish community ... We as parents are the threats. As long as we go out of our way to make other plans on Friday evenings and drive off to exercise our prerogatives as post confirmants, as long as we demonstrate to our children the disdain we feel for Jewish education by staying away in

droves from programs available to us, as long as we refuse to share the beauties of Shabbat rituals at Friday dinners, as long as we teach in these ways, we teach our children more eloquently than Beth El or the Jesus Freaks ever could.” HE CALLED for a Judaism that does not remain static, insisting that new forms of expression need not be threats to the Jewish community. “It may well be that forms of religious expression will be frighteningly different than what we have become accustomed to, but, let’s try to remember that our form of religious expression is a far cry from that of our grandparents and their grandparents. We are part of a growing developing expression that cannot stop if mankind is to have a future.”
