CHINESE AND JAPANESE STUDIES

JERUSALEM — Reflecting the growing interest in Asian culture, the Department of Chinese and Japanese Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has recently been expanded and this year will award its first set of bachelor degrees. Both staff and students in the Department have been increasing annually. This trimester, there a f e three specialists on Japan and eight on China, several of whom were born or spent many years in Chinese-speaking areas. In the entering class at the Hebrew University (total student body 18,000) there are approximately 40 students majoring in Chinese and Japanese studies as compared to 20 two years ago. ONE OF THE BASIC prerequisites for a solid department is good research facilities. Therefore, emphasis has been

placed on building up a library which gives researchers and students easy access to important works on Asia and original sources. Over the past few years, members of the Department have been concerned with acquiring material for the documentation center. This is the only documentation center on China in the whole country. Many major publications that come out of China today can be found here, constituting a good collection for China watchers; analysis of the Chinese press and radio broadcasts, microfilm translations of Chinese newspapers since 1960, a daily Chinese paper, microfilm of a Shanghai newspaper from 1850 to 1940, and reprints of articles on China. The extensive book holdings include most of the titles that

have been published recently on East Asia. Several years ago, one of the great American sinologists, Joseph Levenson, left his entire library to the University. TAKING FULL advantage of the unique position of the Hebrew University in being able to train scholars in both Chinese and Islamic studies, the Department has a special research interest in the relationship between China and the Middle East, both historically and in contemporary terms. Since the 7th century, when the first Moslems made their way to the Far East, there have been connections between Islam and China. China’s interests in the Middle East today, although N still only secondary in her foreign policy, are of concern to policy makers. The Department must therefore also be seen as a national asset. Dr. Zvi Schiffrin, Chairman of the Department, points out, “In the field of China and the Middle East we would like to become the major center; we do not want to be dependent on other institutions for our information on the subject, but want to be the major source; in this particular field we seek pre-eminence.” ACCORDING TO DR. Schiffrin, the Israeli student has the tools for research; many universities have the Chinese publications, but lack the Arabic, neither do they have the men who can read both languages fluently. Currently, two members of the Department are specializing in this field of study. A second important long range project concerns the Chinese Jews. Much personal information has been made available by Jews who have emigrated from China since the Russian Revolution. Dr. I.E. Eber and Mr. Y. Grauze, who are at present working on the bibliographical survey, are in close contact with other researchers in universities throughout the world. The Department believes that one of its important functions is to increase Asia consciousness among Israeli youth as well as the general public. (Continued on Next Page)

Vocational guidance a*iu job placement have also been initiated. Rozalia is almost ready now to resume her former work as a nurse. “IF WE HAD TO TALK about the real difference in our life then and now,” Mrs. Tester sums up, “it is that here we have found Jewishness again. It is not just that in our village we were among the last three Jewish families left and where we are now there is a thriving Jewish community. “It is the fact that there we always spoke Yiddish at home, but never on the street. Here we can speak Yiddish on the street, on the subway, in the stores, anywhere — and we never have to be afraid.” (Mrs. Soskis is executive director of the New York Association For New Americans.)
