Passover Know-How
1. Mother should involve the children in the hustle and bustle of pre-Festival housecleaning and general Passover preparations. The memories of the sights and sounds and smells of the home around holiday time remain with us as Jews throughout our adult lives. So let the children feel the excitement and anticipation! 2. Let your Seder table be as elegant as your means permit. Spare nothing in endeavoring to make the Service superb, the setting breathtaking, the floral arrangements thrilling! 3. Order an adequate number of copies of the Hagadah sufficiently in advance. 4. The father or leader of the Service must set the tone of a religious though cheerful home Service. The Service is to be central and the meal secondary. The mother can help establish this tone by giving the younger children a late afternoon bite so that their hunger will not make them restive. 5. The father or leader should assign in advance the portions to be read by others so as to give them time to become proficient. He should personally study the Mah Nishtanah with the youngest child. They may prove one of the happiest byproducts of the Seder Service. 6. The place for the hiding of the Afikoman should be thought out. Some interesting symbolic warning signs can be posted or vague clues with Jewish content planted along the way. A suitable prize, either a Jewish book or Jewish ceremonial object, should be gift-wrapped for the finder of the Afikoman. The use of money as a gift is improper on the festival. 7. Since the Service is in large measure designed for the children, the children must be involved at every opportunity, especially in the description of the Four Sons, the opening of the door for Elijah, the Ekhod Mi Yodeah, and the Had Gadyo. Teenage children can easily be taught to make charades or quiz programs of these portions. These incidents are not only good but are placed in a setting so gay as to give our children a sense of joyfulness of the Jewish story. 8. The evening must not end
Teen Scene (Continued from Page 3) polis B’nai B’rith Youth Organization had their Installation and induction ceremonies last weekend at Countrybrook Club House. After the usual formalities, Chuck Glick presented the chapter with a Life Membership Record book from the class of 72 (it was dedicated to Larry Greenwald, advisor ’65-72. This was followed by Fran’s and Gregg’s states which was preceded by the induction of new members for AZA 520. Don Fogle and rickel put it together (like they did as coaches for the AZA B-Ball team) and inducted Ben Friedman, Bob Foster, Steve Nahmias, Josh Saltzman, Jeff Linderman, Sam Valencia, and Mike Herman. The installation ceremonies commenced with the following being installed: Roseann Lippsman and Marc Herman .— pres.; Robin Rubenstein and Mark Epstein — v.p.; Rick Passo and Debbie Cohen, Arlene (Continued on Next Page)
v/ith the meal. The closing portions of the Hagadah should be reserved for after the meal. 9. Anyone learned in our lore will feel a bit awkward about conducting a religious Service, but the awkwardness wears away with the doing, and in its place comes a wonderful sense of belonging to a great tradition, of participating in the birth of a people’s freedom, of strengthening the basic democratic ideals of America. There is also the profound psychologi-
cal emancipation from the doldrums and the low pressure fears of the long winter. 10. The Seder table is a stage on which is re-enacted, in symbolic fashion, man of the events which we associate with the deliverance from Egyptian slavery.. To understand the symbolism is important if we are to celebrate Passover properly, namely, by reliving the experience of the Exodus. (From the United Synagogue Program Notebook).
