(Continued from Preceding Pg.) interest in Israel and felt drawn to Judaism. Slowly, he began meeting young Jews who were imbued by a Jewish-Israeli spirit. Possibly it was already then that he had reached the decision to go to Israel. Friends say that his father, a teacher of mathematics and physics, had decided to go on aliya to Israel by 1966, but hesitated to file an application for an exit permit for fear that the authorities would refuse his son, who had evinced extraordinary mathematical abilities, permission to leave the country. ILIYA PROTESTS against the praises that are being showered upon him. “I’m not a mathematical genius. How is is possible to say that I am a promising force in mathematics when I’ve just begun taking my first step? True, I was a good student, but there are other good students too. As for the publication of my papers in scientific journals, the works of others too have been published.” He refuses to speak about scholarships, bursaries and medals awarded to him for his achievements in mathematics and about his portrait adorning the walls of his university, as a distinguished student. His friends say that when Iliya was arrested, the Rector of the Riga University appealed to the authorities that no harm befall him because it would be a loss to humanity. The following day when I wanted to contact Iliya and get his permission to publish the story, I was told that he was in hiding from journalists in the mathematical faculty at the Haifa Technion. It took some days before I succeeded in obtaining his permission to publicize my interview with him. Iliya is now devoting all his time to the study of Hebrew at an ulpan and plans to continue his mathematical studies.
