I know I’m a free man in a democratic country. But I have said all that I’ve had to say, and as for the rest, 1 don’t think the time has come to speak about it. Very many good Jews are still awaiting their turn for aliya in the Soviet Union.” I gave him my promise that I wouldn’t publish anything without his permission. “It happened on the 13th of April, 1969. I was standing by the Statue of Liberty in the central square of Riga. I had pinned a plaquard to my breast, protesting against Russia’s military invasion of Czechoslovakia. Somehow, almost unwittingly, I set fire to myself. When the flames began mounting all over my body, several Russian sailors who happened to be standing near by, rushed up to me. They succeeded in stamping out the flames in a few seconds. Only my hands were severely burned. “A few minutes later, the police arrived, put me under arrest and transferred me to prison where I received medical care. 1 was kept in prison for about six months, and then sent to a mental hospital. I spent two years there, making use of the time at my disposal for the study of mathematics and Hebrew.” ILIYA PAUSED for a moment, deep in thought, and then asked: “Is all this really important? Does it interest anyone?” “Certainly,” I said, encouraging him to continue. “Many people asked me after my discharge from the mental home that were my incentives?

Strange, but every time I offered a different explanation to these questions. It’s indeed a very complex problem. When I now think about the act, I’m not at all sure that the manner of my protest was at all suitable. I can’t say anything of consequence on the subject or explain it to the public at large.”
