We have managed to create the paradoxical situation in which we merge the ideals of the past with the reality of the present — and pay double for the privilege. On every bill there is a 10 per cent service charge, ostensibly to eliminate the obnoxious elements of tipping. These charges are supposed to be divided equally among the help. However, service tax not withstanding, it is also customary to tip the waiter another five or 10 per cent. We go further. There are those we dare not tip. Take the movers. We always givd bottles of wine or brandy after the furniture is in place — properly or not. Our movers are traditionally from Salonika — tough, burly Greek Jews who have monopolized the moving trade since before the State. Impressive to see each one toting in his load. Refrigerators, sofas, book-cases, buffets — each piece is strapped to a back. It is one piece per man, no matter the size of the item. We tip with gratitude for this ex-' traordinary performance and out of fear tiiat, if we don’t, then they’ll pick up the piece just deposited and whisk it back to van and port HOLIDAY TIME I found a few people tipping the postmen and garbage collectors — but sort of reluctantly. Tipping is actually an expression of class differences and we are still paying lip service to the ideals expounded 30 and 40 years ago when the society stressed cooperation over competition and when the needs of the group superseded those of the individual. We’ve gone a long ways from those days, the days when professionals cleared fields of

focks and paved roads with their bare hands, reveling in the glory of manual labor and the equahty of man. Yet, the ideals linger on, giving a special flavor to our society, a special twist to our adjustment to

reality. And who knows what tomorrow will be like if “sabras” like my son become our pacemakers, reverting back to the values of their grandfathers, rejecting our conformity and conventions.
