Tipping Comes To Israel

When asked why, they just shrugged and said, “But everyone does.” When it came to deliveries of foodstuffs, opinion was divided. Half do: half don’t. Some, like myself, never realized that grocery-delivery boys were being tipped. I discovered the custom when my youngest son took it upon himself to get an after school delivery job. Each night he

would report on his loot, the tips he had garnered. IT SUDDENLY came to me that my years of non-tipping these little lads, my son’s pals who had been in the business longer than he, had put me in the category of those “stingy ladies who can never find their pocketbooks.” I faced a decision: to change my image at the expense, literally, of discarding my ideals or to stubbornly cling to what was obviously an unpopular position. son’s venture into the working world, brought about the revolution. How could I let him take money from my friends and not tip their children too? Actually, I had succumbed years ago at the beauty parlors where you tip everyone and, in this modern age of division of labor and specialization, than can come to quite a tribe. There is the girl who washes your hair, the one who sets it, the manicurist, the pedicurist and, if you’re lucky, the same girl who sets also combs out. Tipping here, as in the barber shops, bears no relation to quality of service. It is an expected fee and, if you plan on being a regular customer, you tip. YET, THE IDEA still runs against the grain, still distresses. My older son put my feelings very nicely into words recently. He was recounting his experiences as a counselor at a summer camp. Some of the campers were from the States: their parents wanted to tip but my son and his friends loftily refused such remunerations. “Why, one father even wanted to give me money the first day so Id see that his son would get attention,” my son reported in horror. “That’s bribery.” “And what’s tipping after the summer?” I asked. “That’s just plain not nice. Then,” he added — and he was serious — “you work and do your best not to earn tips but because it is a job and it should be done well.” I’m telling you. Out of the mouths of babes come the principles upon which the State was founded: the dignity of work and the self-respect and satisfactions which comes from a task well done — without monetary incentives, without external inducements.
