The two men renewed their friendship when Dr. Lourie visited Israel, for the first time, in summer 1970, en route to a welfare conference

in the Philippines.

In casual conversation Mr. Albert mentioned to his friend that the Lourie family was one of the most distinguished in Jewry. He told him he was possibly a descendant, or at least an indirect relation, of the Saintly Ari, Rabbi Isaac Luria, who died in Safed in 1572, at the age of 38. Dr. Lourie seemed indifferent, so Mr. Albert told him what little he then knew of the great Cabba-

list and mystic.

IT IS THEN that something sparked inside Dr. Lourie: the next day he hired a car and drove to Safed; spent long hours of meditation at the graveside of his long lost and new-found forebear, visited the two synagogues bearing the Ari’s name, and returned to Jerusalem enthused and ennobled. “The Mayflower Pilgrims were nouveau riche compared to the Lurias,” he said. He went to the Israel National Library and read material in English on the Ari, his life and teachings. Dr. Lourie’s response in turn sparked an idea in Mr. Albert.
