Meaning, to me, that when I I went to — when I first started getting interested, I knew I needed something after my accident. Prior to the accident, actually — around 1951, ’52, because I found myself literally living in a vacuum, and I — and all the success that we were then starting to have — my dad, Will Masters (?) and myself, as a trio — at the end of the night, the people would go home, and I — after one of the many parties, I would just be empty, and I was there alone. Whether I had female companionship or not didn’t * matter; I was literally alone, up here, spiritually I was alone. I knew I needed something, so I started reading everything, and along the way, as I think r one does before you make the kind of decision, I investigated many, many things. I investigated Zen Buddhism; I was into Scientology for a while—I mean enough to be informed, to know what’s going on, and to respect the various religions. And I respect them all. But Judaism, - to me, worked, because I went to synagogues and I talked to rabbis and I read books, and the first time I said to the man who was later to become my rabbi, Rabbi Nussbaum — I said, 4 *I would like to become a Jew,” he said, “Sam, don’t become a Jew,” he sard, “because if you do, they’re going to really kill you, because you’re famous and they’ll say you’re doing it for a theatrical trick and all of that.” And, for four years, almost four years, I would not take my conversion. I didn’t have — I was a Jew without portfolio; I didn't have that. . . (Laughter) I didn't have my papers signed. You know. And I — and humify enough, I didn’t get my papers signed until I got married to Maf Britt, and prior to the wedding, the rabbi brought the papers, and he said, 1 “I’m glad,” he said, “you’re not a Jew (?).” He said, “You’ve been unofficially a Jew for ei|*ht years, almost.** He said, “Now, officially, you are a Jew,” arid he signed my papers. Jackie Trotta {?) was my witness; the late Jackie Trotta was my witness. Frost: But, in fact, the development of that faith gave you strength, as you say, during your accident. * . '* „ • _ Davis: Oh, yes. Oh, yes. I had a scar in my hand, here, right there in the center, here, where, as I was going into the operating room — I was completely out, I didn’t know anything — the last thing I remember was, when the accident happened, was trying to get to the ladies who >were in a car, because — I’ve told the story a .couple of times, but if you , don’t mind my — so you’ll know what I mean. . .
