PROF. RUBENSTE1N REFUTED ON INACTION OF ADL AND OTHER AGENCIES

Editor, POST and OPINION: In a recent communication to your Freedom of The Press page, Professor Richard L. Rubenstein of the Florida State University implied that little attention was being given by community relations organizations to the effects of a variety of forms of preferential treatment in admissions and employment given to Blacks, Chicanos and other racial and ethnic groups on opportunities for Jews. I am surprised that Professor Rubenstein has not noted in the press, particularly the Anglo-Jewish press, the almost daily references to actions taken by civil rights agencies such as the AntiDefamation League, the American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress and the many Jewish community relations councils in opposing unfair treatment of Jews. At the very least, Professor Rubenstein might have been in touch with one or another of these Jewish organizations to learn at first hand what is being done about these developments. Long before this problem came to the attention of Professor Rubenstein, the AntiDefamation League was keeping an annual count of the admission of Jews to all medical schools in the country. After

several years of conducting this preferential treatment in count the survey was diseon- violation of both the continued in 1962 when Jews were stitutional barriers to such found to constitute 20 per cent preference, the 1964 Civil Rights of students admitted to all Act and the rules and medical schools in the country, regulations of the OFCC. or in excess of seven times their — The Anti-Defamation representation in the population. LORETTA NEWBERGER 149 South Broadway White Plains, N.Y. 10605 • •v «* *■>, « t Not Orthodox, But Conservative Editor, POST and OPINION: I have read with interest the issue of your paper dated the 10th of March. I would like to call your attention to the error which you made in a firstpage article titled “Reform, Orthodox Try Agreement.” The agreement to which you refer was developed by the Reform and Conservative congregations in Galveston, Tex. At this time, there is no Orthodox congregation in Galveston. All of the other details of this article are correct, but I do feel that it is important to note that this experiment was tried by the only two congregations in Galveston: Reform and Conservative. RABBI J.M. EPSTEIN 2401 Avenue K Galveston, Texas 72550 , Editor’s Note: Sorry about the error. The 1970 rabbinic registry issued by the Rabbinical Council of America (Orthodox) lists Congregation Beth Jacob. The IQfrO Rabbinical Asserribly (Conservative) does not list Congregation Beth Jacob.

Editor, POST and OPINION: This letter is in regard to Miss Goldberg’s column and the controversy that has been going on. On Feb. 11 Miss Goldberg states: “I do not care if my opinions are Jewish.” May I remind Miss Goldberg that she is writing for a paper catered to Jews and I think it’s only fair that Jewish opinion should be used exclusively. Jews should take pride in their unique identity as a chosen people, chosen for more responsibilities to G-d. No one, especially a young lady who cares so little about Jewish opinion, has a right to pawn off in this Anglo-Jewish newspaper anything but opinion that is Jewish. I’m sure Rabbi Sladowsky, as a Jew, realizes the tendency of

assimilation. As a rabbi who is surely more knowledgeable of Judaism, Rabbi Sladowsky should not have to be challenged. The proper tiring would have been for Miss Goldberg to admit her mistake. Must Jews argue amongst themselves too? What’s wrong Miss Goldberg, hasn’t anyone told you that Jewish law in the strictest sense is every Jew’s obligation. Jewish law was never meant to be questioned. And to Shelley, I hope you see for yourself that all “making out,” as you call it, is wrong and anti-Jewish in every sense. Consult your rabbi about such matters. Remember, G-d is watching you at all times.

Keep his laws well. JACOB LUTWIN 1797 - 41st Street

Rabbi Has Question For New Bishop

Editor, POST and OPINION: I wish to take strong exception to your coverage of a converted Jew, Wesley Frensdorff’s being ordained Episcopal Bishop of Nevada. You note that his parents were killed in a Nazi Concentration Camp. Perhaps a more noteworthy and worthwhile

story would have been Bishop Frensdorffs reaction to his church’s silence while his parents and six million other Jews were being incinerated. RABBI STEVEN DWORKEN Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh 76 Noyes Street Portland, Maine 04103
