THE JEWISH POST AND OPINION

The Digest Of The Yiddish Press Goldmann's China Visit

I

Silver

By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER When Nixon was in China a Jewish wit said that the Jewish

p o p u 1 a tion there doubled. Reason: there are said to be about 20 Jews in China, and the Nixon ent o u r a g e included a t least another

20.

In the Forward Shlomo Ben Israel cites this quip in connection with an announcement that the redoubtable Dr. Nahum Goldmann will visit China. Ben Israel sees the ploy: for some time Goldmann has been trying to get to Russia, but they won’t let him in. So by going to China he may get Moscow to change his mind. Of course, twits Ben Israel, you can never tell about Goldmann who is now down to one presidency, that of the World Jewish Congress (at one time he himself said he did not know Just how many organizations he headed). Goldmann might change his mind, or his announcement, because when it comes to Goldmann, everything he does gets three publicity blasts: 1) when he tells what he’s going to do; 1) when he sends in the correc-

tion; 3) when the reporter repeats what he had originally heard. • From Monterey, Mexico, Rabbi Moses Kaiman sends Forward readers a warning: the old con game is being played by two swindlers with a decidedly Orthodox patina. What happened? Well, this well-dressed pietist appeared in the synagogue and announced that he was a mourner and would like a minyan. The rabbi is impressed with his Jewish knowledge and especially by photos the stranger displays of him and Ben-Gurion, him and Rabin, etc. He says he is a Canadian representative of a large jewelry outfit and that his boss would soon be coming down for a big jewelry purchase. The stranger and his boss are given royal treatment by the rabbi and his board members. The duo then entrust the rabbi with eight thousand dollars in cash to be held over the Sabbath, plus a check for $4,000 to be given to the synagogue. The money is counted out and placed in an envelope which the rabbi puts in his safe. Then the pair remember that they need $2,600 for various expenses, and ask the rabbi to advance that instead of opening

up the envelope and the safe again. The rabbi doesn’t have that kind of money but he phones the synagogue president who feels it an honor to loan the pious strangers the money, for he remembers how elegant they are and how devout. The denouement is familiar: the envelope is opened and its contents are merely strips of paper. An inquiry at the hotel reveals that no such people were ever registered there. The men and the money are gone. (P. Pialbrisker, in the Forward.) Rabbi Sam Silver can be reached at Temple Sinai, Lakeside Drive, Stamford, Conn. 06903.

Your Name By NORBERT PEARLROTH Dear Mr. Pearlroth: I’m curious as to the origin of my last name. It is a Russian name. My father came from Odessa on the Black Sea. The name AZAROW was either spelled with an “ov” or an “off” ending. Sincerely, Martin Azarow, 2431 E. Cochron Street, Simi, California 93065. Azarow is a family name of geographical origin. It is based on the name of the town of Ozarow, pronounced Ozharow which is located in the district of Opatow in Poland where your family most likely originated. The substitution of an “A” for an “O” is due to the Yiddish alphabet in which there is no distinction between these Pearlroth two letters. The meaning of the geographical name refers to “bushes or trees gnawed at by cattle.” Dear Mr. Pearlroth: I would appreciate your explanation, origin, and meaning of my father’s family name. Father’s name — SCHAFF or SHEFFSHINSKY. Born — Kiev, Ukraine. Thank you. Mrs. F. Levinson, 772 Hayes Street, Gary, Indiana 46404. Sheffshinsky — originally Szewczynski — is a family name of geographical origin. It was adopted from a village named Szewce in Poland, where your family most likely originated, although they eventually moved from Poland to the Ukraine. There are 4 villages named Szewce in various districts in Poland. The meaning of Szewce is “Shoemakers.” (Do you want to know what your name means? Send all queries to: Mr. Pearlroth, Jewish Post & Opinion, 101 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003.)
