he explained to me, “a wonderful combination. We have the privacy of our own home but help in buying and selling. Alone I couldn’t have taken on the operation of a farm. Me — with my background or lack of it. But here, in this atmosphere, in this set-up, it has all been very possible. “MORE THAN THAT there’s a friendliness that can’t be described, but is very definitely felt. There’s a feeling that people care, that they’re standing by to help. We sense that we’re part of a larger whole, that our life is entwined with theirs — and it’s a good feeling. “When my wife was ill, neighbors took turns coming in with the food and helping out with the household chores. They took care of the children and even took care of my farm on the days when I had to drive her to the hospital for treatment. She was treated in the out-patient clinic, but it was a day’s business each time — between the time it took to get there, the waiting, the treatment itself and then the trip back “It’s true that with this desire to get away from the city, we could have gone to a kibbutz. Some of our friends have.” The kibbutz is a collective settlement which, as an entity, is responsible not only for production and providing for all community services but also for filling private needs. Members eat in communal dining-rooms and in most kibbutzim, children sleep in separate children’s houses. “THE KIBBUTZ actually really appealed to me,” said my bookkeeper. “Seemed to be an almost perfect way of life. It doesn’t, however, appeal to my wife who likes her own house, her own garden, her own kitchen, the kids eating with us. every meal, sleeping in our house. She was ready for a change — a new country, a new language, a new way of life but she also wanted her privacy and individualism. So for us the moshav is a wonderful solution. “The children have taken to moshav living with an enthusiasm that I’m not sure they would have had if we’d settled in town. I mean — isn’t it every city kid’s dream to have a tree-house of his own, some chickens to care for and the thrill of eating melons from his own garden?” His three youngest children go to elementary school in the moshav while the oldest travels by bus — with the other children of his age — to a regional secondary school in the area. “Even though they’re busy with a variety of extra-curricular activities, we see much more of them than we did back in the States. There’s definitely more of a family life, a sense of togetherness which I was beginning to feel was slipping away from us. All of the children help with chores; all have their own special tasks. I think part of the problem, this generation gap they talk so much about, is simply due to the way we used to live. I just practically never saw my family. I was the breadwinner. I gave. They took. Most of the time I was never home. Now we’re involved in this farming thing together. “MORE THAN THAT the (Continued on Next Page)
