The conscious development of a Jewish community which will be more than an aggregate of individuals and which will possess cohesiveness, common interests, and mutual responsibilities. Not a return to the shtetle of the 16th century, with its forelocks, sheitel and Polish grab, but a Twentieth Century community, innovative and exciting, joining together young and old, filling old casks with new wine, bringing “the holy tablets down from the heights of Sinai to the plains of realization.” A community, the members of which will respond with alacrity, I love my people, its history and traditions. I am proud to be

a Jew.

WE CAN PREDETERMINE our future if we begin in the coming years to rethink the scale of priorities which now exists in the Jewish community. Welfare and defense organizations, convalescent homes, grandiose synagogue structures, and imposing catering establishments have become monuments to the efforts of the past six decades; but to what avail if Jewish life is diluted through intermarriage beyond recognition — a Golem without a soul. Let not our monuments become our tombstones! We must rethink our priorities, painful and agonizing as it may be. It may very well mean deflecting the great monetary resources and indefatigable energies of AmericanJewry from the above mentioned organization into the creation of a Jewish Resources Institute consisting of the greatest minds in the Jewish world today who will show us how to preserve Jewish identity in a Gentile world—a comprehensive Jewish community master plan, having as its goal to teach us to live, worship and relate to God, Torah and Israel —a “People Planning” Institute which will lead to the creation of a Twentieth Century Shtetle in the noblest sense — a Jewish community of vitality, creativity, and devotion in which we will be at home with ourselves and with the world — a community with a sense of destiny and common purpose in the service of God and mankind. With this as our goal, we may yet succeed in stemming the tide of intermarriage.
