By RABBI ALLAN BLAINE Democracy, brotherhood and equality for the Jews are not advanced by intermarriage. One of the flaws in the suffragette movement at the turn of the century was the mistaken notion that to get the same rights as men meant being the same as men in all respects — “dress like a man, act like a man, talk like a man!” This attempt at “levelling” was wrong then and the mistake is being repeated by the present day “Women’s Lib” Movement. There is a feeling among many of our young people that universalism, brotherhood and democracy mean blending into some common denominator. Scholars such as Professor David Reisman, who advance theories of Individualism and speak forthrightly of the evils of groupism, do not advocate this kind of homogeneity. Blending and levelling of thought, culture and taste, is an invitation to totalitarianism. Cultural pluralism in which a person can fulfill himself within his own particular religion or group has been a hallmark of democratic government and representative government. IN ADDITION, IT IS important for young people to know that love does not conquer all. This is a Hollywood hallowed myth in which bells ring and lightning strikes when the right couple meet. At the risk of being considered unromantic, I would say that love is not the romantic hodgepodge of Hollywood movie moguls. Married love thrives on sharing, and faces and accepts the realities of the personality and character of the marriage partner. Let not the myth of “love conquers all” delude us. Marital adjustment is difficult enough without the additional deep-rooted problems of dissimilar background, cultural patterns and religious faith. I recall a sociology professor, using the formula “Locus is the Focus,” in speaking of love and courtship. What he was saying in essence is that the best marriages are those in which there is a similarity of background. Adjustment in marriage comes more easily if one falls in love with the girl next door than the girl in the next state. Indeed, some social critics speak of the need for “Residential Clustering” as an answer to the intermarriage crisis rather than the erratic pattern of mass mobility which typified the past decades of Jewish life and led to the weakening of the family structure. As old fashioned as it may sound, “one can predetermine the kind of person with whom one will fall in love if there is sufficient clarity of purpose and adherence to principle.” WHY DO OUR YOUTH intermarry? The idealized myth of the “Lonesome Rider” who lives and dies, by, for, and unto himself; and the inability to identify positively with one’s people, may well be at the root of the high rate of intermarriage and assimilation among third generation American-Jews. I wonder if any one of us, faced with the problem of intermarriage, could today confront his child with the words: “Do you realize that when you

intermarry you betray your heritage, you destroy your religion, you cut yourself off from your people.” For centuries these words had force, potency and meaning because they were based on love and loyalty to a people and a faith. Today it would be ludicrous to use this kind of reasoning with American-Jewish youth. With no background, historic experience or Jewish identity, they simply cannot understand loyalty to Judaism and are indifferent to its survival. How can we stem the tide of intermarriage? There are no easy solutions at hand. Intermarriage will continue as the price we Jews have to pay for living in a free society. WE ARE A SMALL people.

One which has dwelt alone for thirty centuries. We have tasted the fruits of freedom, permissiveness and secular education for a few brief years. Not nearly enough time to adjust our newly won freedom to our ageold faiths and traditions. We can succeed if we are willing to make certain sacrifices, among which is a willingness to take those first difficult steps in reorienting ourselves to “think Jewish,” be Jewish, feel Jewish and living Jewishly. Each of us must look into his Jewish heart and Jewish home and determine whether it is of a quality worthy of survival. If it is not, be assured that this will be instinctively felt by our children. They will (Continued on Next Page)
